Finally! I got an open NAT. I messed up by opening the wrong ports at first. My only question is that can making your computer have a static IP put it at a higher risk for hackers?

  • 08.06.2010 7:29 AM PDT

Does the same steps apply if you switch from a wireless connection to a wired one? I have been thinking about buying a Wired cable in the hopes that it will open my NAT. Will it?

No, it's completely safe.

I'm on the final stretch of getting my NAT to open. I'm opening some of my ports apparently (Really I have no idea what I'm doing :p ) and I did what you said on the guide here on part B under Port Forwarding. So what wrong? This is what mine looks like http://i36.tinypic.com/2ib0qdf.jpg
And this is what the example of the router that's my type: http://portforward.c...ox_Live_360.htm

Which ones should I be opening and how, because the guide and that site are telling me different things. (I'm really awful with computers, and I've spent the last 3 days trying to get my NAT open, and I'm near sick of it :P.)
Thanks!

Any solution to my problem? I'm seriously ready to be done with this. I can't stand knowing my connection is not nearly as good as it could be...
Alright, for your problem with the sites giving you different ports to forward, it's just because you haven't read far enough down the guide. The 2 extra ports portforward.com tells you to forward aren't always necessary, so they're mentioned at the bottom of the guide as a secondary method (I think to make the process as simple as possible). You should just forward all the ports mentioned on portforward.com to be absolutely sure.

Also, make a proper link to portforward.com (that one has a random ellipsis in the middle...). Just follow the instructions on portforward.com and you should be fine.

Oh, my bad. Here's an updated version of what my router setting looks like: http://i38.tinypic.com/1zgxez7.jpg

And heres what the port forwarding site is telling me: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin /F5D7230-4/Xbox_Live_360.htm

Identical isn't it? (Except obviously the IP address on the site isn't the same as mine). So what am I doing wrong?
And when I'm playing games like MW2 and I can be in a match where everyone has a 5 bar connection, but the highest I'll reach is a 3 bar. This is because I have strict NAT, right? Or is it just the router itself?
You did fine, it looks like there's an error on portforward.com, which is weird. It tells you to forward ports 53 and 3074 twice, which I think is unnecessary.

Also forward the ports mentioned at the bottom of the guide, which are 77 and 3330.

And if that doesn't work, then go back to the beginning, and read all of the OP and the next 2 posts, they have several steps you can take for troubleshooting. If after all that it's still not open, post again.

Yes, done all troubleshooting, tried the DMZ, and I think I might just have to buy another router with open NAT, but that'd really be annoying. I JUST WANT OPEN NAT :P Agh! so annoying.

If you've done absolutely everything in the guide, then there's not much I can do. Contact your ISP, see what they say, and if you have incredibly bad luck, you may end up needing to buy a new router.

You, sir, are a god, and are worthy of seven Nobel Peace Prizes for bringing peace to the technologically challenged. I 7hank you for the immense time you took to make this thread, and I will personally see to it that ALL of my friends with moderate or strict NATs will read this, as I failed to explain it to them in the past. Seriously, though, I cannot thank you enough for this. This shouldn't be in the hot topics. This should be stickied. In every forum. EVR.

Everything looks to be working perfectly now after following the guide, thanks. I do have one question though, when I go in to enter the port numbers, I set the LAN port and IP information, but below this it also has an optional section to enter remote port and IP information. What are these? Should they be opened as well?

I do have one question, though. My NAT has been open forever and my friends on moderate or strict can't play with me. Is it their fault? Because I though OPEN was compatible with all.

That is probably their fault.

Hello i hope some one can help me out.

I'm no expert but i know a lot about networking, but i can't get my xbox out of the moderated NAT.

The case:
i always played with an open NAT. A few moths ago halo 3 started to complain about my NAT not being open.

Cause of my new school i did not have very much time to play so it didn't bother me much. But now on my vacation i want to play but i think the connection is worse then before.

what i have done:
router setting:
router: ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A
DHCP: 192.168.100/24 with a pool size of 15 (so 192.168.1.100~115)

xbox setting:
Static IP:192.168.1.17
subnet, gateway and DNS are good.

Forwarded ports 53, 80, 88, 3074.
Can't find DMZ so i think is off.
switched of UPnP.

I have connection but still moderated.

i also tried to set the xbox on the DHCP with UPnP on, but still no success.

Any tips?

Open up ports 77 and 3330 in addition to the ones you have opened currently. Make sure UPnP isn't on while your ports are forwarded, otherwise they may conflict. If this fails, then connect your xbox directly to your modem by ethernet cable and check the connection. If it's still moderate/strict, then it means that it's your ISP's fault, and you need to call them.

If your connection is clean after the direct connection, then put everything back (Modem - Router - xbox) and set turn off all forwarded ports, and turn off UPnP, and then set a DMZ (demilitarized zone) on your xbox's IP, and then check.

Come back and give the results of all this when you're done. Specifically mention each step.

The tests go...

Xbox 360 - - - Network - - - Internet - - - Xbox Live.

Where would it say NAT?

Ok guys, here is a detailed report on what I have done, but my NAT still isn't open. Can anyone figure this out? If you can't then I'm just stuck with strict, or I get a new router. So help would be awesome!

Part A: Obtaining IP Address: Well I knew my IP address, but when I looked at it again (but the way you showed, not the one the Xbox shows) the last 3 digits are the ones I had picked out for it but I didn't mean to change it. (But it's the same digit as it was before when I went into my router settings. Oh well) I hope that doesn't affect anything

Part A: Making Your Xbox Static: Ok, I've gotten all these numbers for these things I don't understand. So I put them into my Xbox 360. So I put in ALL of the exact same numbers except I change the last digit to a 3 digit number (I guess it won't hurt if I tell) which is 180. So I can still connect to Xbox Live. So I guess I did something right :P

Part A: Changing your computer to static: So I make my way to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). They were set to automatic, so I guess that means it wasn't static. I put in the exact same stuff as I did on the Xbox 360, but I change the last 3 digits of the IP address on this one. I change it to 225. So I change it to manual, and I'm still connected. So hopefully that means that the pc is static as well.

Part B: So I put in my ORIGINAL Ip address into the "whatever the kids these day call it, and type it into where you usually type www.google.com" :P. This is an example of what mine looks like (NOTICE: This isn't mine, this is a random pic off of port forwarding) http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin /F5D7230-4/F5D7230-42.jpg

Part B: DMZ: Ok, so on that pic you can even see DMZ on the left so I click it, enter the password, and I'm here: And btw something I just noticed: I have 2 ip addresses? One static and one private?? What?? I'm so confused! (Yes, total computer noob here!) Here's what it looks like for me, and as you can see I put in 180 as the last 3 digits, which are the last 3 digits of my static Xbox 360's. So I click enable, and apply! Woot, Open NAT, right? Wrong. Nothing has changed whatsoever AGH! Here's what it looks like for me: http://i34.tinypic.com/256v18m.jpg

Part B: Port Forwarding (The evil of all evils) Ok, so I'm still totally confused about this, because the guide and Port Forwarding tell me different things. See?: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin /F5D7230-4/Xbox_Live_360.htm But I'll just follow the guide. (BTW I disenabled (word?) the DMZ) So he says to put it on both UDP and TCP, but I can only put it on one, so I guess I'll just put each twice, but on UDP for one and TCP for the other. Here's what it looks like: http://i33.tinypic.com/rcon0i.jpg
So it still doesn't work.

I've tried the troubleshooting stuff, but to no avail. I just don't know what to do next! I'm so frustrated, but I really want to fix this. I would like just to get another good router with open NAT, but my Dad would probably not want to go through the 2 hours of setup it takes. So I think that may not be an option.
I really need some help. Thanks to anyone who can!

Would you kindly step in-front of my BR?

Man I remember this from a long time ago.

Pro Tip: Be Patient. Restart everything after you do anything and wait ~30-60 seconds.

As it says in the guide:

-Make sure you have firmware updated.
-Make sure UPnP is OFF.
-Make sure you're EITHER forwarding or DMZing....NOT BOTH.
-Keep all the original numbers and plug them in, EXCEPT for the "IP address" which you only change the last code for:
XXX.XXX.X. (<Same as IPCONFIG) _ _ (<make up a new number, that is not used on the network)

Unless you really want to don't worry bout' changing ur computer's config.

-It really does work, and lets you play/share/connect with new better entities.

I have a question.

When i run my xbox network test it says that its open.
yet, when i search for a game in halo3 it tells me my nat isnt open, i also cant connect to some friends.

The only time i run my xbox network test and get an moderate/restricted nat is when i forward ports.

whats going on?

Thanks for the help

There would be a notification saying that your NAT is not open, and then it'll do some troubleshooting. If you did the test, and no notification came up, it means your NAT is Open.

The test in the xbox guide is more reliable. Does your router have UPnP? Because if it does, and you forward the ports with UPnP still on, they kind of cancel each other out.

There's a section of the guide where it tells you to stop reading, and then it tells you to read again. That's where it tells you how to update your firmware.

If you can't find UPnP, the it's because your router doesn't have it, not every router does.

As for the rest of your problems, I can't help. If when you directly connect your xbox to your modem you get Open NAT, then I think you may need a new router. If it isn't open even when directly connected to your router, then call your ISP and ask them.

First of all i have an modum-router in one with the latest firmware. Sorry that i forgot to say.

my steps:
- set xbox to static IP
- turn of UPnP on router/modum
- added port 77 and 3330
- tested: failed
- turned of router-modum
- tested: failed

its still moderated.

- called my ISP and they could not help me, they sead the connection is fine and i should call Microsoft.
- called Microsoft, (MEN they've got a big phone menu. like 20 steps to get some one on the phone). he sead that all the ports are correct and i should try it with UPnP on, but still no success.
- on a forum some one sead i should turn of the router's firewall but it had no effect.

the weird thing (that Microsoft sead to) is that i can't configure port forwarding with UDP and/or UTP..?

A link to the port forwarding page on my router

i can't find DMZ on all IP.. don't know if you can set it only on the xbox's IP?

Reach blows. Nuff said I sold it. Say I'm trolling I don't care. Black Op's is okay but I don't play much but it's better than Reach by a long shot. I mainly play Fallout 3 now because it just doesn't have all the issues that other games have.

I'm sorry I don't understand, I hate computers. Just tell me what to do or make me a video. Just by reading something on the internet won't help me because I have no idea what your talking about. Go to portforward.com and find your router on the list. Then on the next page, find xbox live, and just click past the ad. There is a guide with fairly simple instructions, and pictures to go with it. Follow this and you should be alright.

Well it seems like you've tried everything, which is good (or bad, depending on how you look at it). It's either your ISP's fault, or your router's fault. I'm fairly confident your ISP wouldn't lie to you, so it's probably your router's fault. You're either going to have to buy a new router, or live with moderate NAT.

Oh, and there shouldn't be an option to set a DMZ on all ports, and if there is, don't do it . Any hacker will be able to easily get into your system, you should only be setting a DMZ on your xbox's static IP, if any at all.

Call your ISP ! If you connect directly to your modem, and still get moderate or strict NAT, then the next step needs to be calling your ISP. I don't know who it is, in Canada it's probably Rogers or Bell, but you need to call them.
