I have to deal with the task of getting two xboxes to get open NAT. The task is most difficult and frustrating. Especially when I get banned for something silly when I had just gotten done typing a five paragraph report on what my ISP and router manufacturer said to me.

I promise you that I did not lie in my previous post. I don't care how many times you place a call into tech support. You will NEVER get OPEN NAT on both xbox's it's technically impossible.

Open NAT means that whenever Xbox Live sends a packet of information to your external IP address, (i.e. how it distinguishes you from everyone else in the world) it goes straight to your Xbox.

The problem with NAT is when you make a request from your XBOX your router embeds your request in a session and the response from xbox live is returned through the NAT to your xbox. XBL doesn't always just respond and sometimes it initiates communication, which unless you are forwarding that port directly to your machine it has no idea how to talk to your xbox, resulting in either strict or moderate.

The paradigm you have is that with two machines hidden behind your router, and XBL only talking on a set port, only one can be classified as open.

So, unless you set up both xboxes to use the same IP address, (which if you do this, only one xbox will work at a time) you will not be able to even get open nat on both boxes.

The only solution is for you to have two routers(or a fancy expensive router that will do multi-netting) and two IP addresses from your ISP.

And no the router listed in your post will not solve your problem.

Ignore me if you want, but I do this for a living and I'm giving you free professional advice.

Thank you for you input but first off, I know for a fact that you can in-fact have two xboxes with open NATs becuase I have 2 friends that both have two xboxes and both of them have open NAT on both xboxes. Second off, how do you know that the router listed wont work? Im not being rude about it I just couldnt find a way for me to find out.

Also, I have two routers, but only one is wireless and the other isnt. How could I use 2 routers to fix this problem?

I said that the router won't fix your problem. Meaning that it won't open NAT for two Xboxes at the same time.

It will work just fine for OPEN NAT on one box.

Having two routers is inconsequential as you still only have one outside address that XBox Live is talking to.

As to your friends, I call either shenanigans or they have two external addresses. It's just how the technology works.

I will add though that the only possibility would be for the uPNP functionality to be working in the background. In theory this could/should work. But even at that point technically only one XBOX will be running OPEN at any given moment in time.

Which, unless MSFT has made some changes to XBL and how it works recently, you would be flipping back and forth between OPEN and Moderate.

To be honest, I too call shenanigans on my friends. They say they havnt done anything to theyre router but I tried to access it via teamviewer to see their settings so I could make mine like that but the default password wont work. I think that they have done something to their router that made it like that. My friend is also VERY paranoid about computers. So he BARELY trusts me on his computer.

But I still believe them. Could you list a few routers that would allow open NAT for two xboxes?

Also, I just checked my NAT on my xbox and my bros. I turned mine on, OPEN. Turned his on, MODERATE. Turned both off and turned his on, MODERATE. Turned mine on, OPEN. This means that I always(with the exception of one time last week that was strange) have open and he has moderate.

Honestly it doesnt matter to me right now if I have open NAT but when reach comes out...Im going to be praying that it will be open. I really dont play xbox much anymore because all the games I have are boring now. Thats going to change when reach comes out. Man, I think Im going to play hooky. lol. Seriously though, I think I might.

Do you serve a purpose, or purposely serve?

Great thread, wish I'd have come across this a while ago. I was struggling with a strict NAT for a long time, then I bought the newer 2 pronged wireless adapter and not only is my connection greatly improved but I now have an Open NAT.

BANOOSH

I have a Thomson modem connecting my network to the internet. Other Thomson users take heed, you seem to have to open the ports on the router AND the modem.

Suicide is a way of telling god, 'You cant fire me, I QUIT'

This is a great thread. My NAT seemed to keep jumping between open, moderate and strict. Hopefully now it will be plain sailing for me.

Thanks

Fav. quote (will try to change weekly)
"She Calls herself 'Cortana.'

She spoke her first words (in Italian): 'when the game is over, the king and pawn go into the same box.' The words are my mothers,; spoken to me after our first game of chess ( the first and last time she won!)" Diary entry: Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Halsey, on the creation of Cortana. November 7, 2549

not sure if this will help or not, as currently my mom is debating on whether or not to give me my Xbox to test this But I did everything step by step, currently though I have a Linksys E2000 and was wondering if it is the same as any of the other Router setting screens.

Can you help me out with this please Master Chief?

Important!

Let me preface this in saying I am a college student in an Apartment complex with families and, other college students.

I used this guide and used the DMZ setting. It worked initially then after a few days went back to moderate. Stunned and perplexed, I continued to work and tried port forwarding. To my dismay, it resulted in a STRICT setting. I was at a loss. I scoured the Internet and Bungie's own help section to no avail. Then, during my odyssey, I came across something that said each Router has the same generic IP address (198.162.1.1) Also, it said phones (cordless)operate in the same 2.4 GHz range. Then, it clicked. If phones can interfere with the wireless router, then so can other routers. Now, back to my preface, I live in an apartment complex. There are atleast 5 other routers using the SAME IP ADDRESS. So, I simply changed my Router's IP Address and here we are, a Instant, Open NAT.

So, if you are in an apartment complex or a neighborhood where you are picking up several routers at once, simply change your router's IP address (I used 172.16.100.XX, something simple and easy). I thought this was a unique and odd situation, however if you tried this guide and many others without being able to find a solution, just try mine.

Edit: DragonDraconis, nearly every Linksys Cisco routers will have the same exact set-up (Minus details depending on the exact model and which bands it can broadcast on such as B,G,N,N+,N++).

I followed these exact same steps, asked for help at Netgear and my NAT is still set at Strict... I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I even reset my router because the ports started missing... anyone had this problem as well, please message me with a fix. I've looked everywhere. :(

Try plugging directly into router with a ethernet cable AS A TEST. If it is still restricted or moderate, it is your ISP's issue, not yours.

oh my god!!! it worked! i've literally been trying to do that for years!

Ok So I have a Modem/Router thats plugged into the Router in my Room, Do I Have to Portforward from my Modem/Router to the Router in my Room? and then from that Router to my Xbox360?

/Sarcasm

My bones hurt when I read that the subnet mask "scrambles your IP address from outsiders," this is almost the function of the NAT in a sense.

The subnet mask defines which parts(octets) of the IP address point to the network address, and which parts point to the node(any device) on the network.

The average subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 since most networks use class C address ranges(192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255).

It would change to 255.0.0.0 for networks using class A addresses in the range of 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255, and to 255.255.0.0 for networks using class B addresses in the range of 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255.

To go further, there is the Classless Interdomain Routing(CIDR) method of subnetting.
This offers much more power than the three standard classes.

With this method, an IP address is followed by a slash which designates the number of bits the IP address uses for the network identification.
Since an IP address is made up of 32 bits, and there are eight octets(meaning eight), there are 8 bits in each little section(octet).

An address declared as 192.168.2.1/24 uses 24 bits of the address for the network, meaning the first three octets, and the last octet for the nodes. This address has a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

An address declared as 192.168.2.1/16 uses 16 bits of the address for the network. This gives a whole new range for nodes on the network. So the last two octets can identify a node, and the first two identify a network. This would allow 65,536 hosts on the network.

Not that this is extremely relevant, I just don't want people to read incorrect information, especially in this subject where terms are so often confused.

It still says my NAT type is strict when I try to make my xbox static IP. Any Help??

The cakes are in your heart.

I attempted this and failed miserably.

  • 08.28.2010 9:38 PM PDT

thank you very much.. i thought i would be able to do it but i did thanks to you heheh thanks!

  • 08.28.2010 9:59 PM PDT

I did it. I don't really notice a difference yet. I'll play XBL again around 5 or 6 when everyone gets home and starts using the internet, causing me lag. But so far it got rid of the "NAT not open or set to strict" message from H3

In the wars of the future, wars will be fought by video game nerds who can't use anything but a sniper rifle.

Imagine, someone equipped with an automatic rifle will venture out into the battlefield and be killed by a member of his or her respective team because they're a "noob".

RIP 118. 2008-2010.

Thank you! I've known how to forward ports, and I've had them forwarded to my Xbox, I just didn't know I needed UPnP needed to be turned off. Thanks a ton.
