With all the confusion people have I strongly encourage you to check the support site from microsoft they have very specific directions to correct this with screenshots.

Anybody consider that it's going so slowly because we are all trying to access it and it's not even supposed to be public yet?

Also, if that is the case, it means it's also slowing down for the employee...he's probably going to just get up and go to Outback for a nice Bloomin Onion and we're gonna all be left sitting here wondering what the heck just happened to our mystery man

"Now we are going to go into your router's software, which is located inside the router, not the computer. You can access it from any computer that's connected to the internet, even a PS3. (By the way if you have a PS3, pick up an oversized mallet and accurately but firmly connect with the device to extract the greatest entertainment value.) Grab that piece of paper with all the numbers on it and type in the local IP address of your router/default gateway, whatever the kids these day call it, and type it into where you usually type www.google.com"
This part confuses me, do I go to the CMD and type in my Default Gateway, type in google.com and press enter?
Because that didn't work for me. :(

Type it in the address bar.

If you were to go to google, you would type "google.com" in a bar, right? Type the number in that same bar, alone. For me, it would look like this. That bar where I typed the numbers is the address bar. If you have several bars, it will be the one furthest to the top.

Oh, and don't worry if my number happens to be identical to yours, that's just the number for a lot of routers :) It has nothing to do with anyone accessing your computer, so don't panic.

Someones just wont learn many things.

Thanks, this guide gave me some tips which I did not know earlier. Now I will probably get my NAT working with my friends. I appreciate your work. :)

I love you

  • 09.11.2010 4:00 PM PDT

It worked!

  • 09.11.2010 10:44 PM PDT

do you have to do the port forwarding part? My friend is at a college and his connection isn't very good, and since he]'s at a college, I don't think he'll be able to login to his router's software. So, does he need this part? If he does is there a way around it?

Thank you Bungie! <3

Hmmm... I've tried everything in the OP but the only thing that works for me is setting my 360's network settings to "automatic" and using Port Triggering. Neither DMZ nor Port Forwarding works. I made sure only to try one at a time, and I had UPnP disabled. Ah, well, I still have open NAT. :)

I have a WRT54G v8.2 BTW (latest linksys firmware)

Also! For DOUBLE Routers (Modem/Router - Router - Xbox360) What you are going to want to do is open up the First Router http://192.168.0.1 and Portforward to your Second Router(IP will most likely be 192.168.0.5), Once that is Complete. Open up your second router - http://192.168.1.1 then DMZ Enable your 360 to your xbox's Static IP Address! Hoped this helps those who were in the Same situation that was in, and took me around 3 month's to figure out!

Three is the poor man's seven.

Ah, networking ftw.

I have a bit of a problem. I made my xbox's IP static and all that, tried opening ports, ran the test again, and still had NAT set to moderate according to the test. Removed all the ports, put on DMZ Hosting and ran the test again with no NAT errors.

I don't want to keep DMZ on and would rather just use ports, but that won't work for some reason.

Here's a SS so you can see if I made any mistakes on opening the ports. There wasn't an option to make the ports both TCP/UDP at the same time so I just did all TCP. Also disabled UPnP.

Thanks in advance.

Edit-
Aha! Fixed! No more NAT problems!

Solution: Decided to look around a little more and saw someone post this link dealing with NAT
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979000/

Just about half way down it tells you which ports need to be opened/the protocols for them so turns out it was the protocol assignment on my part.

Specifically
TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 53
TCP 53

Took out the ports if they weren't on the microsoft list so now it looks like this

ODST FTW

You da man homie. I had both my Port Forwarding and my DMZ hosting set to my XBOX360, they were canceling eachother out and I had NO idea. OPEN NAT FTW!!

Can't thank you enough. Port Forwarding is the -blam!-.

  • 09.15.2010 1:19 PM PDT

I can open nat for 1 xbox but not for two or three can any body help cause i dont think it can be done. I can get three xboxes to say moderate nat type but not open.

Is there anyway to fix the upstream bandwidth?

In the Halo Reach Network Status menu, I have "Warning" for my upstream bandwidth...just updated my router with the latest firmware, opened up the ports, and tested the speed, which was almost 1mb/s upload speed....even called my ISP but all they said was that all the benchmarks for my modem and all that were correct and their speed test came back fine...could be becasue they're are so many people online but that doesn't make a difference if the network status is reading my individual upstream bandwidth.

I can't even stay in a game now and Bungie keeps banning me for "quitting" when I'm just getting dropped out. It's pretty funny.

Anyone have any idea on how to solve the upstream bandwidth issue?

fyi, i had my nat open and had to apply the setting again for halo to pick it up. Weird but just an fyi

  • 09.16.2010 10:38 AM PDT

This was a good guide, but as the OP mentioned, different routers act differently in their setup. This caused me the greatest confusion. In fact, I had to DISABLE my UNpN as opposed to enabling it.

Heres my problem from another thread:
First of all I can't post in the optimatch forum because I can't access its email (reported to microsoft) my GT is vX Chronic for those interested.
Anyway I currently have no issues with the playlists but the actual matchmaking process, I like to play MP with my friends but matchmaking just can't find players. Both myself and my friend have OPEN NAT on our xboxes but yesterday we tried finding a match in every playlist for 5 minutes and there was no match. It seems to be only between us two and when a third friend joins everything runs better with matches taking one minute to be found. I need help as I would love to play more Halo but I just can't find a match with the people I need to play with. FYI I have no problems with other XBL games including Halo 3. Thanks

Update: Also have waited in Arena Doubles where there should be parties of two for 20 minutes, says players found but also searching for parties.
Why did I buy the legendary and Standard edition if I can't even play :(

For me, this guide did the exact OPPOSITE of what it is supposed to.

i tried it for my computer first, my ping in World of Warcraft skyrocketed to 10,000.

i just tried it on my Xbox, my NAT was strict, i just changed it back to automatic, and its still strict.

now i have to restart my -blam!- to hopefully fix it.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Best thread I have ever read anywhere concerning NAT for the Xbox 360.

Damned good job! Well done!
