First, let me compliment the post. It's impressive coming from someone outside the field.

Now on to the helpful information:

I was able to get TWO Xbox 360's to OPEN NAT!

-My router is a D-Link DIR 655 Find it Here (Purchased almost 2 yrs ago; not sure if I have latest firmware, but believe I do; not sure if listed as XBox Live compatible)
-Both 360's are wired to router using CAT-6 Ethernet Cable
-Both 360's are still set to Automatic IP; BUT, I use DHCP address reservations for them (essentially a different means to the same end as doing manual IP on the 360)
-UPnP is ENABLED
-Firewall with SPI (stateful packet inspection) is ENABLED <- I can get more specific with exact boxes checked here if need be
-ONE 360 is set in DMZ using its MAC address (00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx)
-ONE 360 JUST WORKS without any other changes (assuming UPnP is the reason)

Although I am in the IT field, I have to give credit to the router for this. Unfortunately, even with this success, I am still unable to get a friends similar setup working with a Linksys WRT-610N.

Extremely helpful. Thank you so much.

NO SIGNATURE FOR YOU!!

Very good information. I had moderate or strict NAT for along time before I found out how to do the static IP, port fowarding business. Although my true problem may have been my modem firewall which had easy to follow buttons basically add Xbox Live as safe. Now my router and modem are opened up and I haven't had any trouble since then.

So,

Im currently running an Open NAT with 20mbps Internet, and it still takes me 20 mins to locate a game and its laggy as crap when playing :(

Help.

Thank you so much, I was very iffy about trying to open my NAT and I had tried a multitude of things which still left it at 'moderate', your way finally worked though so THANKS!

Beware the Wolf

Using UPnP we've managed to have two Xbox 360's running on an open NAT side by side for years. we have a bog standard Netgear WGA54N ( or something like that).

on occasion when we have a friend or relative bring a third box round, we've managed a "moderate" on the third box, not managed all three open yet.

this is with both xbox's being wired, and more recently with one being wired and my own being wireless N (via the xbox's built in wireless).

UPnP is the only way you'll accomplish an open setting on more than one xbox simaltaneously, because the router can work out whats going (i believe because it makes use of MAC addresses in the traffic, which you can't do manually), for best results ensure that the router is assigning its own i.p addresses to the xboxs automatically and not static, also ensure firewalls are off and you aren't using port forwarding (for xbox live ports)/D.M.Z.

UPnP is the simplest way to get OPEN for your NAT, try giving it a go before attempting any advanced methods, UPnP is the only way to get mutiple working on the same network, though as a sidenote some routers are far better at using UPnP than others..

one final note is that changes in NAT aren't always reflected instantly, often i've played with settings, had strict or moderate, changed nothing and run the test a further 4 or 5 times, and only then attained a steady OPEN setting.

I hope someone can answer this query here? I've asked everywhere and not one person seems to know of a solution. I've googled and searched for an answer and still nothing. Thanks in advance if you can help me!

My problem is I seem to have a timeout periodically during a match. In which time I'm looking at the lobby (like what happens when someone is quitting) but the game is still ongoing. Then I'll be back in the game, usually after being killed by someone because my character is just standing still.

It happened to me during Halo 3 too. None of my friends have had this problem. I have OPEN NAT settings so don't understand how my internet can be affecting this. But I guess it must seeing it doesn't happen to anyone else I know. Is it it something to do with how the server is set up? Does anyone else have this issue?

If anyone could help me get round this I would be entirely grateful.

Thanks!

Well, it would really help to have more information about your setup such as: ISP, download/upload rate (measured), make/model of modem and/or router, wired/wireless, whether you live in an apartment/dorm or a single family home, etc.

But... without knowing what is what, I would start testing to eliminate problems by simplifying your internal network to possibly isolate a particular piece of hardware as the culprit.

I would take your Xbox and plug it directly into your inbound internet connection (most likely a cable/dsl modem). Then test your connection by playing a few games. If you already have open NAT with your current setup, this change should not impact that. We are simply testing to see if a router or other piece of hardware is causing your problems.

If, after testing under these conditions for a while, you STILL experience the same problems, then we can reasonably assume the problem is in your dsl/cable modem or on your ISP's end, in which case a phone call should help you.

If, on the other hand, you seem to be operating fine while just connected to the modem, then we can start looking at the device(s) between the modem and your Xbox (or the box itself).

Try this out, if you want, and get back to us. Also provide more information if you can.

Seriously!

I have upgraded my internet service dowload/upload capacity, done port forwarding on all four ports, set up a static IP, and even hard wired my 360 slim to the router and it still takes forever to find a game in matchmaking and I can't even do any firefight, invasion, arena b/c it takes forever and just restarts the search.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I have a netgear wireless router, fyi.

Demons to some. Angels to others.

Here is a quick question that I hope has a simple answer. On the main menu for Reach under Network you see your Upstream Bandwidth,Nat Type and Packet Loss. Now, since Reach came out my settings have been listed as "good" for Upstream Bandwidth, "Open" for Nat, and "Low/Excellent" for Packet Loss which Bungie lists as optimal for playing Reach. The other day I noticed that the Upstream and Packet loss are both showing as "Undetected", but the game is playing fine and nothing changed on my end. So, is something up on Bungies side reading these settings? Any info would be great. I am real curious about this...

"Providing targets for clear headshots since 2009"

Bumping this to the top. Hopefully one of the Mods will pin it. Seems a lot of players are getting disconnections or having other connection issues. Perhaps if we all do everything we can to optimize our own networks, it will make the experience better for everyone.

I have my Xbox connected through the DMZ, UPnP is disabled, and it still says I have a strict NAT. Could the problem be that I'm wirelessly connected to my wireless router?

Lose the DMZ. create a static IP for the xbox 360 and all other devices on the network. and forward the said ports manually to the IP address of your 360, especially 3074 as it seems to be unique to xbox live. and turn UPnP on. it's important.

yes. but you should forward the ports to your pc's IP address. and make sure your xbox 360 knows that the gateway is your pc's IP. that's as close as you're going to get for that setup.
