Great post. Unfortunately, I just discovered I already had open nat. So I guess I'm at the mercy of my -blam!- ISP. (the best available in my area)

For players in the UK who have a BT HomeHub - none of this stuff works, because it's nigh on impossible to access any of these settings for your hub... However, there is an even easier solution!

The factory default for the HomeHub is open NAT - but BT send out updates the the hub, which always close the NAT. So, to open it again you need to reset your hub to factory settings. To do this, find the button on the back of the unit that you press to synchronise the unit with the phone handset that it comes with. Hold this button down for a good 20 seconds or so, until all the lights have flashed a bit, then all lit up, then all go out again. Release the button and give the hub ten minutes to come to life again. Presto - open NAT! All at the (prolonged) touch of a button!

I hope this helps - it took me a long time to track this information down.

I had this same problem, i got over by resetting my network details to factory defaults on my xbox network page, then input all yr details again, wep key or whatever, load reach again and all is rosy and sweet

Thanks so much for this guide. I loved your choice of words in some sections lol!
My xbox's NAT is finally open BUT I don't get why we set up a static IP for, lets just say, a laptop...? How do I open up the right ports for my laptop? I set up my static IP and I'm just not sure what ports to use..

  • 10.19.2010 9:53 PM PDT

I'm having a problem. No matter what I do, it stays at Moderate. I have My UPnP enabled, DMZ disabled, all ports triggered and forwarded correctly, and I even have my MTU set. What now?

Keep it simple stupid.

OK, my NAT is strict but one time when I unplugged the router and the xbox the computer all of it, then turned it all back on and it said I had a open NAT, but now after a few months, I have a strict NAT again, why is this?

Do I change the last digit (for example 123.45.67.89 to 123.45.67.80) for just the IP address or for everything else like the gateway and subnet mask and DNS servers?

I'm experiencing lag in nearly every matchmaking game despite port forwarding and low packet loss and searching based on best connection. I do have an upstream bandwidth warning, though. This is especially bad in firefight.

Now I have a router set up with Tomato firmware, so I can see and regulate bandwidth usage. I have set up QOS to significantly prioritize xbox traffic, but I still never see upstream bandwidth from the xbox go above about 30-50 kbps, despite having more than that available. How can I improve my upstream bandwidth, when the xbox itself doesn't even attempt to use the full amount available?

Description of what port does: Enter in Xbox_live1 and so on.
Starting Port: If I say open 3074, enter 3074. if I say open 200-210, enter 200.
Ending Port: If I say open 3074, enter 3074. if I say open 200-210, enter 210.
Some routers also have 'port map' and 'port map end.' Don't try to understand this, trust me, just enter in the same numbers as the other start and end ports.
UDP/TCP: Just set every port to UDP and TCP, "UDP/TCP." Usually it is specified which is needed, but this will open the port for both kinds of protocols. Don't bother understanding this, just enter in both every time to simplify it.
IP address: This was the whole point of doing the whole static IP shizzle. Enter in your Xbox 360's static IP. If you're opening the port for your computer and the computer has a static IP, enter in the computer's static IP. Easy.

Now, open these ports.

Im stuck on this part. It says that the service name is already in use (Xbox_live1). What do I have to do in order to open the other three ports?

  • 10.23.2010 3:12 PM PDT

use xbox_live2 xbox_live3 and xbox_live 4, that should do it!

but ok, heres MY problem, after doing this my laptops can no longer connect to the home network, no problem i thought, so i reset the router and still nada, wired connections work just no wireless, i also decided to use DMZ, heaps easier and less risky then playing around in settings, anyway, if anyone can help me let me know!

EDIT: i fixed it, when i reset the router i forgot to put in my WEP key, lol

Thanks, good thread. Only thing I would mention is in some places you try to explain things that don't need explaining and for some people it could add some confusion to the situation. I mean I dont care what the stuff means, just how to do it ;) Apart from that, great stuff.

  • 10.24.2010 7:47 AM PDT

I really am not good with all this. I have made static ip and all of that but im wondering are there defiantly no risks in dmz for my xbox. i mean can it get hacked?

  • 10.24.2010 5:15 PM PDT

Can someone actually help me please?

  • 10.26.2010 7:53 PM PDT

I got these cheeseburgers man....

Ok, so oddly, i thought you could only get strict NAT type by a wireless network, but on my wired connection for my xbox, i got a strict NAT. I called my friend who is a computer guy and he just told me to reset my router and modem, and it changed. But i just thought it was weird that i got a strict NAT.

that part confused me a bit too. i did what it said for my router on that page he/she listed and it didnt say anything about descriptions and all that. my router was trendnet TW100-S4W1CAv2 on that website.

I need to know how to reset a router's IP to it's default state (I messed up on a step.)
I have a Netgear router if it matters.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Generally, if I ever mess things up, I just push in the reset pin button on the back of the router and start from scratch. The router should have a small pin sized button on the back, maybe near the power plug insert. Yes, I said insert... try not to giggle.
