Subject: Retailed Halo PC doesnt work with online downloaded one?

I bought halo PC a looong time ago and i just picked it up to start playing again and one of my friends had bought it online and me and him were gonna play. Well it turns out that we cant find each others games even by using direct IP, ive had this problem before and im wondering if its because he bought his online and i got mine from a store. We tried everything and we still couldnt find each others game or for that matter find any similar games we could join. Is there a solution to this? Or do i need to download Halo PC from the internet and enter my product key to get it to work. Any help would be much appreciated!

Something smells fishy...

Let's just get one thing clear: A downloadable version of Halo Combat Evolved PC is not for sale. So I can only suggest that you don't download it illegally.

I believe you want to play a LAN game. In order to play a multiplayer game on your LAN with your friend you both have to be connected to the same network.

You have to create an ad-hoc network so that your friend can ultimately connect to your LAN game. Next have your friend connect to your PC through the ad-hoc network. Once connected, open up Halo and create a LAN game. Lastly have your friend join the game using the direct ip method.

If you want to create a multiplayer game that appears on the Gamespy server list you have to create a server using the Haloded.exe application. Then you and your friend can play online without having to be in relatively close proximity to each other.

Get the Halo dedicated server 1.02 installer from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=76F0 B376-B0F9-4F93-8F22-55096558BC2C&displaylang=en

Then download the latest Haloded.exe update from this link:
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/halopc/patch/haloded.exe

Note#1: I suggest creating a dedicated server on a PC that is not the PC you will be using to play Halo. Designate a computer to be your "server computer."

Note#2: You could use a decent laptop with a good processor to run the server.

Note#3: I suggest you do not run your server from a PC that is wirelessly connected to your network. You should connect the server computer to your network using an ethernet cable.
