This is probrably the stupidest place to ask for help but, I want to capture footage from my Monitor to my laptop. I use a VGA Cable that looks like this- VGA Cable I don't have an adaptor for the speakers, I use Turtlebeach X31's.

I've looked everywhere on the interwebz but have seemed to never get the right answer. I don't know many tech support sites that could help me out.

I want to know what do I need to capture footage. I know already I need a VGA splitter, but I'm asking what else? Help would be appreciated VERY much.

P.S. The reason I posted here is because I have no idea where else to ask. If you guys have any suggestions where to ask please tell me. Thanks.

Unfortunately this falls under the Flood according to forum rules, as you're not posting any work. Getting started with machinima is particularly hard in the gallery, as you can't even link to FS items to show camerawork, the only option is to render to video, overdub upload to YT and link here as proof of concept, then ask about what capture gear to buy. You'll want several opinions anyway and the only way you'll get several opinions is by giving us something to watch. Better to do as ppl say for now and track some info down outside b.net

Sounds like a bunch of Justin Bieber wannabes in here. I bet you all wear skinny jeans too.

Assuming you have a similar set-up as I do, where your Xbox and computer share the same screen, you have two options.

For both options, you'll need the splitter. Depending on the splitter, it could split-off in many different types of cables. I'm going to assume it'll either split it to a VGA or component cable though.

Now, to your recording options. You could either get an internal video card that connects to a PCI / PCI-E port on your computer, or you can get an external one like the Dazzle. The external one is probably a little more user friendly, but the internal one is more direct. Also, internal cards have the potential to have outstanding quality if you buy a high-end one.

If you buy an external one, you'll probably need to end up with a converter cable to turn that splitted VGA from your Xbox to a component cable. That, or your splitter splits the video straight to component where you plug it into the capture card directly. In the likely event that it's the first one, you'll need to get the converter cable from VGA to component, and plug the component cable straight to the capture card. You might need an extender cable for the component's audio too, but that shouldn't be too hard to find.

As for an internal capture card, this varies from card to card. Some cards have VGA connectors, others have HDMI, S-video, and component. You'll have a few options here, but to make it short I'd either do the same as you did with the external (Splitter to VGA to component / Splitter to component to capture card with an audio extender to go to the capture card in case your audio cables come short), or find a capture card that offers a straight connection from the splitted VGA / component cable to the card.

After you get the cabling set up, all that's left is the software. Normally capture cards come with software that allows you to record off the card and save it as a video file, where you can edit it in a movie editing program such as Sony Vegas.
