this might work maby a software that blocks words and keeps people from posting "bungie sucks" posts that say anything about bungie "sucking" in any way!
Ah, an expansion of the blam-filter.
Many unacceptable words are currently caught by the Bungie.Net profanity filter (aka- blam-filter). You may have noticed it in action when someone's post reads, "Bungie can suck my enormous -Blam!-!!!"
Trust me, the author of that is not going to take the time to replace the word they wanted with "-blam!-".
The blam-filter is not omnipotent nor is it omniscient, it catches some words that have people scratching their heads and allows other words past that has other people covering their eyes. The forum rules, Terms of Use and Code of Conduct still apply and people who violate them by cursing, or intentionally bypassing the filter are exposing themselves to punishment.
There are frequent requests to add terms or words to the blam filter. A good example would be the word "ass". To some people it is a curse word and is a profanity. But it would also turn a Bungie slogan into "Don't make us kick your -blam!-!" Not quite the same is it?
Similarly, it has been suggested that the other "n-word" (rhymes with "tube") be added as it is not encouraged nor really permitted on the forums. It's not been added and so the filter and forum rules seem to give people a crack into which they can fall.
Honestly, the word "suck" is very context dependent. For example, I can say that I suck at Halo 2 and I doubt that my statement offends anyone. Someone else could say that I suck at Halo 2 and they would be stating a fact. Now, someone could say that I suck an unmentionable body part of a farm livestock animal and at that point, I think that we're getting into "going too far".
Communication and language is a very subjective and fluid thing. To come up with a "one-size-fits-all" rule that automatically censors is a touchy thing. I suspect that is why the blam-filter has it's current vocabulary and additions to it are rare and infrequent.
Can I test the blam filter in this thread?
No. What you can do is hit reply to this thread, type a profane word, and then hit preview. You can do that in any thread as long as you don't post.
