I think that it's great that we can all toss out ideas and discuss them in a civil manner.

I was just thinking how many orders of magnitude better this thread is to a lot of other stuff here. ;)

Ah, well that's enough self-gratification for today.

I could also see a downside to that though. Console-PC wars and the fact is that the PC folks in The Maw are actually a quite tight-knit but very active community. The Library on the other hand is a bit of a ghost-town.

Honestly, I don't know what would be best for the forums and the community. I think that it's great that we can all toss out ideas and discuss them in a civil manner. Though it does seem like it's a Sketch decision and it appears that he's decided for the moment. If history is any guide though, our ideas and talk about the good and bad of each of them are at least viewed and considered by the powers that be. I find that comforting.

However, in the hey-day of the community the Maw was a perfect place for all Halo gamers. If there was a way to control the natural aggression between the two console "factions", such as a specific Halo PC support thread (i.e. a thread pertaining to all manners of support things) and then something for Halo Xbox technical matters (e.g. XBC), then it would be a great and wholly beneficial convergence for the whole Halo community. I know there are a lot of old-skool Bungie lovers who spend most of their online time in the Underground, even the Septagon, but would love to participate in a less diverse Halo forum (to some extent, I'm one of them). I think it would at least be worth a test, but as pointed out, it's not mine or anyone else here's decision to make.

Well I'm sure if Maw denizens were consulted on the matter, and realised that ultimately it would be they who were the dominant 'culture' in the hypothetical joint forum... well I doubt they'd be much opposed to it. Still, I do agree that their discourse should be protected if possible.

I really do think that the Maw is just a support Forum and that the users there would benefit from freely being allowed to discuss anything Halo in "their own Forum". Yes, consultation would be best because it's not for any of us (except the almighty employees) to decide what the fate of two entire Forums and two separate communities should be.

I don't know if it's really appropriate to change The Maw too much. Doesn't Gearbox direct users towards there as a communtiy forum?

  • 08.23.2005 3:18 PM PDT

Back in the day, when The Underground was for all Bungie discussion, we never had the problem of members attacking one another because one group played Halo PC and the other played Halo CE. Now, the forums are by no means what they were then, but those were the months when Halo PC had only recently come out. If there were going to be any problems with them attacking each other, you'd have though that they would have taken place in the hay-day of those two games. They didn't. In fact, the only reason The Maw was created was because all of the members asking about help fixing Halo PC were becoming a distraction and needed a place of their own. Now that both games are entering the "Old School" phase, I think that they need to be merged to boost the activity.

This is how I picture a much more effective Forum Setup:

(Note: I only list the major forums. The minor ones are still there but didn't think that they really needed to be added- I wanted to keep the list simple and organized.)

* Halo CE and Halo PC forum.

* The Septagon

* Halo 2 Campaign and storyline Forum.

* A Halo 2 Multiplayer Forum.

* Halo 3/and Movie Speculation forum.

* A Classic Bungie Game Forum that also included Bungie discussion (Soffish, Pimps at Sea, Ling-Ling. That kind of stuff.)

* An Off topic Forum.

That seems to get all of the bases covered, and keep everyone happy without making things too complex.

That's pretty good Banshee Barron, but you forgot The Septagon! I think that we should make a giant leap into the future instead of multiple small steps. It would be easier on the bungie.net team, and it would last for a long time. So, one major thing that is different from my setup and other's is the absence of Halo forums. It's been four years you know, I think it will be regarded as old-skool sooner then you think. So here it is:

* Next Project/Halo Movie Forum
* The Septagon: Bungie.net Disscussion
* New Mombassa: Halo 2 Single Player
* Zanzibar: Halo 2 Multiplayer
* Optimatch: Halo 2 Playlists
* Some name for an Old Skool forum
* The Flood: Off topic

Leaving the Halo movie threads in The Underground is fine with me, but somebody had better change the description of the forum.

"Halo Movie, Bungie General and Old School games", eh?

Bungie General, Old Skool Games, Halo 3 speculation, and Halo Movie

Movie discussion goes into the Underground.

Eventually, the forums probably will be changed up a bit whenever we announce our next project, but change before then is unlikely. And no, I won't tell you when that is.

Blame human error rather than me actually wanting the Septagon gone. I'm editing the post now.

It's just like me to forget the VERY forum I am posting in. Sheesh.

In my oppinion I dont think that Halo Movie Discussion Threads should go in The Underground. I mean, the good thing about that forum is that you can make a topic and never take a look at it for a while, and it will still be at the top of the list.That slow movement is what I like about The Underground. Once more info is realesed on the movie, The Underground wont be slow moving like it is now. And I know alot of us would rather be able to see a our topic created 6 hours ago still on the front page. Instead of haveing to dig through mountains of topics trying to find it.

Well at least thats what i think.

A seperate forum for the Halo movie would be good.

Ah well. I think that the forums could really do with an overhaul though, so I hope you announce your next project soon ;-)

More patience.... Humph....

Well, we waited three years for a sequel, a month for more forums at the unveiling of the New Hotness, endured four months of spammers (davester and the like), a few months of standbyers, a few months of modders, and are still waiting for the Search Feature. I really don't mind waiting for anything as long as it's good. And so far, I've yet to be disappointed.

  • 08.23.2005 10:21 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

so we get a Newer Hotness along with a game announcement? sweet!

I do concur, I think a Halo Movie forum is worthy of its own independence. I also want to see a star on the walk of fame with Master Chief on it. I'd settle for an oscar though.

The thing about these forums that make them successful is that people can discuss things and tell everyone new things they found. But that is because it's a game where you can explore, exploit, and excavate. With a movie thread, I fear that all it will be is, "Do you remember that one part where MC destroyed the mothership? That was cool." And other variations of "That was cool." I think the only real discussion that goes on will be in the groups, groups dedicated to the movie. There isn't enough in a 2+ hour movie to create a forum that will remain active and, more importantly, productive. Of course, that's just my opinion.

I fully agree with Halifax. The Underground will no longer be a place for old school games if Sketch allows Movie topics to be made there. It will all be "Who should play the MC or Cortana or whatever".

Don’t believe me? Go to The Underground, and count all the topics titled "Who should play as the MC" and I guarantee you'll get more than three. More proof you ask? Go and count all the topics asking "What should be made first Halo 3 or the Halo Movie". You'll also get around three or four.

Now The Underground is a slow moving forum, which makes since considering less than half of the Bungie community play old school games. So picture one topic about Marathon is made, while there are eight other topics about The Halo Movie (which are getting replied to very quickly). Now considering most topics about the Halo Movie as of now are repeated, that adds to more than ten topics about the movie. Which means, that slow moving topic about Marathon will collect dust on the 5th page. And remember, the only reason the Marathon topic was slow is because less than half of the Bungie Community play old Bungie games.

So, if The Underground is described as Old School Bungie Games, why are the topics that are actually about Marathon or Myth collecting dust on the 5th page?

I don’t usually act serious about many things, but I am serious about what I have stated above. I do NOT think Halo Movie topics should be welcomed in The Underground.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

Here's what I think they should do the Forums (that is after bungie anounces their next project) But I don't know. Get rid of Zanzibar and Optimatch and make two forums for the next project.

- The Septegon
7th Column and Community
- The Underground
Bungie General, Oldschool, and Halo Movie
- New Mombasa
All Halo 2 disscussion
- The Maw
Halo PC
- The Library
Halo XBox
- Bungie's next project
Disscussion for the Campaign and general
- Bungie's next project
Disscussion for Multiplayer
