I've been a participant in The Maw for some time now. From what I have noticed, people seem to have lack of proper language when posting in The Maw, or forget that The Maw if for Halo PC or Halo Custom Edition. It may not seem so severe now, but you will notice it eventually. When you come across something that is so bad, you can't even read it, then you will understand why I am writing this thread. Here are some simple guidelines when you create topics or posts in The Maw:
1) DON'T USE CAPS-LOCK ALL THE TIME. Common use of caps-lock is for yelling in anger or excitement, or to highlight important info. Whenever I come across a post that is nothing but caps-lock, the person gives off an idiotic vibe, and i'm less likely to give a friendly and helpful reply.
2) Do not type huge run-on paragraphs. if you don't know what run-on is, it's the lack of separate sentences where they should be for example I'm typing a run-on paragraph right now isn't it annoying when you can't read something as well as you should be able too I know you might think i'm taking this all too seriously but it is really annoying when you can't read something so i might as well not reply or just reply telling them to type correctly before i help them or whatever you should have gotten the message by now unless you are one of these people.
3) Do not use a subject that just says "help", or "HELP", or anything else that just says help. If you have a problem, please put a few words in the subject that describe what kind of problem you are experiencing. For example, if you have a graphics card problem, put something in th subject line that gives others the message "i have a graphics card problem", or something of the sort.
4) If you have a technical problem, please describe your system's specifications. Some of these specifications include:
*Cpu: brand (Intel, AMD), model (Pentium, Celeron, Athlon), speed (in Ghz. or Mhz.)
*RAM: size (Megabytes), type (not as important, but DDR for example)
*Hard Drive: size (Gigabytes), number of hard drives
*Video Card: brand (ATi, Nvidia), Model (9800 Pro, 6200 GT, ect.), interface (PCI, AGP, PCI-Express), and driver version (Catalyst 5.8, for example)
*Internet connection: type (dialup, DSL, Cable, ect.), speed (upstream and downstream, Kbps or Mbps)
*Other things: Firewall brand and type, Windows version (XP home/pro, 98, ect.), Halo PC patch version (current is 1.07)
Also, be sure to provide a thorough description of your problem. If somebody else asks for more information, give it to them if possible.
5) Do not, I repeat, DO NOT SPAM THESE FORUMS! They are not only annoying, but can take up precious forum space where somebody could be asking for help or spreading important information. Types of spam I have noticed include:
*Polls that have no real importance (example, which halo is going to be the best? 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, or 8?)
*information that isn't worth telling or unrelated to halo PC (example: "my girfriend broke up with me". That has nothing to do with halo pc.)
*"Bumping" topics. Bumping is a tactic used to keep a particular topic that isn't getting any replies on the front page of the forum by the topic creator making repeated, non-sensical posts. As Me15ter always says:
if a topic isn't getting a reply, there's probably a reason why.
Excessive bumping is not tolerated by the forum ninja's or me, so just don't do it.
*Double posting: where one person (usually the topic creator) makes two or more posts in a row. The good people running bungie.net gave us an edit post button. Please add to your existing post, not make another consecutive post. This is pretty much another form of bumping, so don't double post if possible.
6) Do not make posts asking about when halo 2 pc is coming out. Read the sticky entitled READ THIS REGARDING HALO 2 PC.
7) Before posting a question or help for a problem, please read the sticky entitled The Guides: READ ME FIRST. You just might find help for your problem there.
8) Please read the sticky entitled Forum Rules and Regulations before making any posts. This guide is roughly based on that sticky.
9) This is The Maw, where we post about Halo PC or Halo Custom Edition. Don't post in here about Halo 2. Most posts about Halo 2 belong in New Mombassa or Zanzibar.
10) Pretty much, just read all of the stickys before you do anything. They may have the info you are looking for. Please post after you have read all of the stickies. That's what they're for.
Edit: info on double posting now included under guideline #5.
