Subject: Way to end Group take overs, While allowing members to be promoted

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Heres my idea

Ok so groups get taken over cuz the founders give full power to untrustworthy members.

So Why not make a Rank for groups that can promote people, but only to a certan rank within the group. That way the founder can decide whether or not to promote them further.

And if an untrustworthy person is given this rank for limited promotions they cant just promote there firends to full control.

I think this would stop take overs completely.
There would forever only be 1 person with full power.

What say you? Bad idea? Good idea? Impossible idea?

I'm not sure I completely understand. The only thing that I can say is don't give full control to anybody unless you trust them completely. The worst a normal moderator can do is blacklist everybody for 7 days, they can't make it permanent.

Ok in simpler terms maybe

Make a rank that can promote, but not to full control.
Sound good?

I see what you are saying. Personally, I think it should be up to the Administrator and only the Administrator to give out promotions.

Well, it's not a bad idea, but it's not that necessary. As for now, just don't give anyone the ability to edit security or have full control privileges in your group(s), unless you fully trust them.

Well Im think for large groups.

With some many members the Founder cant always keep up on promotions.

Thats why i thought of it.

It might be something to look into if it's still a serious issue by the time the web team update the column. For the meantime, it's best for founders to simply not give out powers. At least ones who can't fully trust their members. Or, instruct those whom they trust enough to not promote members past a certain point.

I like my Groups to have a number of administrative figures in to manage members. A few immature "conquerors" shouldn't change Chapter management to such an extent for the rest of us.

I wasn't suggesting a change, I was just voicing my own opinion. I don't run a chapter and I have no clue how much control I have in the chapters I am a moderator, so I figured it wouldn't be too bad for only one person to have the ability to promote. Anyway, just my opinion...... :-)

Well Imagine a group with say 1500 members. How well would 1 person keep up on promotions?

You need help, but who can ya trust these days. This one conq has 45 alternate accounts, how do you know whats what these days.

  • 08.24.2005 9:24 AM PDT

The group didn't start off with 1,500 members. It would be a progression: when a moderator is needed due to the size of a group, a moderator is added. If it is done progressively, you would never have a shortage of moderators. How do you think Bungie picks it's moderators? They have far more than 1,500 members.

Right now the only members in my group that have privaledges are ones that I trust fully, because I've known them all for a while.

  • 08.24.2005 9:34 AM PDT

It would be better if only Full Control users could promote people to ranks with Full Control privileges.

Well, If I ran a group I would give out mod powers to no one ever. Especially because of that one group "The Trolls" that likes to do that.

Make it kinda like the military. In order to promote you need a good recomondation from everyone in your chain of command. Example, say you have a entry level person in your group, after a certain amount of time he can be put up for recomdation for promotion by say a mod in your group. The mod forwards that recomondation the the forum master in your group, then to the founder for approval or rejection. Just depends on how many "links you want in the chain" The founder or "commanding officer" should always be the only one with Full control. Otherwise its organized chaos. The founder needs to maintain a slight advantage over his #2 man.

edit- Before giving promotions also ask the question "what has this person done for the group" These should be earned. But when starting a new group a helping hand is always nice.

I dunno, I mean, if they can trust you....

I'll be on my own side.

There shouldnt have to be counter-measures to this, because ultimately, its YOUR decision who gets power(provided youre someone of authority). Bungie shouldnt waste time making something that wont matter. Let's say your request is granted, and someone gets promoted to a certain rank. You give them full power. The guy goes on a rampage...the group dies. In the end, it still comes down to you, because youre the one who gave them that power. No matter what their rank before, they had no authority.

The problem could be easily solved in one way. Just make it so you can't promote someone to a higher rank than you.
