This should be counted as spam. It's detrimental to the community.

How do you figure? As far as I can tell, extra text doesn't hurt anyone and only offends thsoe who want to complain about something or are easily offended (see what Recon said above).

Moaning about 'signatures' is about as meaningful as moaning about improper grammar and spelling. Both can be annoying, but you can always learn to ignore it.

We just need to instigate more elitism and Mythic shenanigans.

The problem with spam is that it interferes with normal forum functioning. A signature makes me move my scroll wheel a grand total of 1/8 of a click. It really doesn't get in the way.

I am sure that if someone had a 6000 character signature it would be counted as spam, or annoying links. But it doesn't bump the thread, and it only takes a line or two of space. Maybe it should be addressed when every single problem has been fixed.

I don't see the value of a signature, because your username accompanies the post, but it doesn't really bother me. It is a bit annoying when people steal other peoples signatures, it kind of defeats any purpose the signature had to begin with.

Honestly, this must be a joke. Child, listen, stop trying to defend yourself because clearly you are incapable of it. The only idiot in this thread is yourself, and trust me, it is obvious. So, how about you do as I asked earlier and log off, mommy and daddy wouldn't want you staying up this late.
-- Direct Control, BAMF

I really don't see how it is spam as long as the main post has a point.

lol @ this thread, it's awesome.

Yorkie is a legend.

I'd consider yorkie a legend if he actually did something to earn that status.

It seems the general consensus is that signatures will stay. I don't see what the big deal is OP. It is only a line at the end of their post with their name.

$.50 in store credit.

It should be a rule that all signatures must be unique, and there is a required amount of BB code and random characters that must be added. Also, sigs are required, and not posting them should be banable.

Leave it like that for two months and we'd start missing the "Yorkie" outbreak.

Yeah, but people aren't supposed to judge your posts by your name. They're supposed to judge you by their content. So adding your name to your posts forces people to remember your name, and thus to judge your posts by your name.

The judgment, of course, is usually "this person is weird."

Maybe its because I remember the old style signatures, but the small sigs at the bottom of current posts don't bother me.

I've never found signatures annoying. Silly sometimes, yes, but *eats a sammich* has been going on in the Flood for years and I still chuckle every time I see somebody close their post as such.

If it's a simple "signing of a post" I don't see why it's that big a deal and I certainly don't consider it against the rules. If it was a link to a group advertisement, or a thread someone's trying to advertise, then I would probably send the person a PM or a warning, telling them to stop.

Why, you ask?

In order for an offense to occur, two separate conditions must be met.

1) Someone must do something offensive.
2) Someone must be offendable.

Me? I try to not fulfill either condition. If you see someone who is clearly engaged in one, try not to be the other half of the equation.

So, if the actual yorkie stated that he was offended by everyone using his signature, everyone doing it would be banned?

I don't think a ban would be needed. More than likely a warning would be put into place for the people doing the offense.

The Flood is just this awesome :D

I love this thread, it's filled with forum ninjas and B.net employees messing around and making my day *saves thread*

OT: it can get a bit annoying when too many people using it (I've been in a thread full of them) but really it's not too big of a problem when only a small amount of the community is using it.

What are we supposed to be discussing here?

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

I dont think it's spam but I do think it's odd since you do have a user name to say who you are. I know it doesn't say exactly who you are but still. The point being is that in a conversation one doesn't often finish their sentence/thought with, "Sincerely, Steve." or what have you.

I just don't see much of a point to it.

  • 06.30.2010 9:56 PM PDT

That post... you lost me.

So, is it against the rules to not have a signature now?
