I know this is more than half a year late to ask, but why do the Covenant strap bombs to them and make them work as slaves?

In the books, they are worshipped as spawn of the gods. Why would they do that to them?

I'm so confused.

Two reasons. One, the bombs were a necessity to ensure that if something happened they would not be captured and used by anyone that wasn't covenant. Two, after the split, the elites had always revered them, but the brutes saw them as pawns, and as such treated them like slaves.

Sorry, but that is completely untrue.

In Halo: Contact Harvest, it is the Jiralhanae who worship the Engineers.
