I have two things. First the Spartans fought the Atheianians in the Poleoponiesan war (bad spelling) they had victory over Athens. But after holding power for a while Thrace (or some city state that started with a T) Athens and other city states began to fight Sparta and had victory because the Spartans would not change tactics. Don't know if the has anything to do with Halo 2.

Next, The Hannibal theory. Hannibal was a general from Cathage (Tunisa) who lead an army to defeat Rome after making a pact with his father to always fight Rome. After leading his soilders through the Alps Hannibal allied with the Laugorians and Gauls (native barbarians). Possible lead to Covenant picking up other races to help there fight. Hannibal was always out numbered but eventullaly was at the capital of Rome. Hannibal did not have siege weapons so he went to Archimedes a master siege weapon expert. After allying with him and the Greeks Hannibal was called back to fight in Spain after his brother had been ousted from Spain by the Romans. Hannibal was eventually forced to retreat to his homeland and fight an overwhelming Roman offensive. Hannibal finnaly lost his first battle (and Carthages last) at the plains of Zama againast Scipio Afrikanus and Carthage fell a year or few later after the romans broke their treaty to not attack Carthage.

Some of the story does not fit but some does. If you made it so Hannibal and Carthage where the Covenant and The Romans where te Humans it would fit nicely. Say that all the battles Hannibal won where the glassing of planets. And say that because he needed siege weapons to destroy the walls of Rome is like the Covenant trying to get their artifact or whatever it is that they want with Earth so they DO NOT immeaditly glass it. If you switch places with the fighting in Spain and Hannibals near attack on Rome it fits well. Halo is like Spain. It forces the Covenant to take forces to defend the ringworld after the humans land and fierce fighting begins. Hannibal retreating could the Covenant retreatring to their home world or a nearby planet. The humans win (battle of Zama) and the war is pretty much over execpt maybe a minor battle here or there. That's all I have for now. Oh yes, Greeks could be Brutes.
