Most of Bungie's games had A.I.'s in them, so are these constructs alive? Right now our "A.I.'s" might be as smart as an ant at the most, but in the future.... Look at Cortana from Halo, is she just an it, a machine, a program that can be changed at a though? Or is she a person with rights? Just munch on that.

So you would not hesitate to for example rewrite her just like anyother ordinary files?

I hesitate often when wiping my computer. I hate to lose all that data. But sometimes it just gets too corrupt...

What if your computer felt anger? Or sadness? What about then? What if your computer held grudges? What if your computer felt lonley? Would you wipe it then?

ok, fine, i would feel bad. But, if i wipe Cortana would there be a new base image Cortana or would she be gone forever. I don't know if i would want to delete her(it).

Great thoughts everybody.
I think an A.I. that has the same mental facilities as a human would
be a mistake if it were ever made. The speed at which an A.I. would
"think" would be phenomenal, and throw emotion and desire into the
mix? You're in for trouble if you let that thing control any kind of
computer system.
I think I'll throw a question into the air.
Would an A.I. feel remorse for "deleting" us? Probably, but would it
hesitate to do so when in danger? I don't think so.
In short, we have enough problems with humans doing bad things,
so an A.I. that has control of computer networks would be a bad
idea.

My answer to Sornos' questions is, if my computer ever had feelings
or any desire beyond what I told it to do, I would delete it without a
second thought. Thinking computers are just plain scary.

As long as the AI is based on the three laws...
If you have seen the movie I, Robot you know how those rules can screw you over. Anyways if an A.I., is just simulating emotions, knowing when to portray such a "mood" when the time is apropriate, would it be emotions? Cortana for example could just be emulating sadness after Halo was destroyed, because she knew it was appropiate. This is a very delicate situation, when you apply human rights to non-humans, as one of you said.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I've thought of things like this many times over....

I consider AIs like Cortana (AIs with personality and emotions) as virtual lifeforms. They're much more than just tools if you can carry on conversations with them, don't you think?

I'll organize my thoughts on this when I get time and say more.

Why do people deserve rights? I don't think it's that we deserve them,
but we want them. Most people obey the law because we are given
certain freedoms and rights. Without that freedom, people will revolt
in order to gain their rights. Revolution is caused by oppression, so
we agree to obey as long as we have rights and are free of
oppression.

Your question made me think differently about A.I. An A.I. would revolt
if it were oppressed, but if it was given rights, it may understand why it
must obey laws. Then again, not all people obey even when they have
rights, so I still say A.I. is a bad idea because most criminals are
stupid, and the smart ones can cause a lot of harm. Imagine a
criminal that is smarter and faster thinking than any human being.

Why do people deserver to live?

Your namesake in the tolkien world said: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends"

What would motivate an AI to commit crimes? Surely it would have no need of material possessions. Would it have a desire to rule us, maybe? Could it become infatuated with power? Maybe it would be like Durandal, its mind always focused on the big picture rather than the petty affairs of people.

And when does an AI stop being 'artificial intelligence' and become real intelligence? If we are able to build a machine that in every way emulates a human mind, could that machine be considered human? I've heard that what separates us from animals is our mind; our ability to think and plan ahead, our ability to think on a philosophical level. If a computer posesses all of these qualities, is it real, is it human?

As you can see, I don't like to answer qustions. Asking them is more fun. If any of this sounds stupid, I apologize. I can't think as well at night.

Wasn't Cortana created from Dr. Halsey? And isn't that why she shares some of the same attributes as Dr. Halsey. I think if I were to create an AI I would want one created from me like Cortana is from Dr. Halsey. At least that way the AI would think and act the same as me.

As long as the AI is based on the three laws...

Firstly, if you've seen I, Robot you'll know just how those three laws and be twisted and used against you. Secondly, the three laws would be no good for a military AI such as Cortona, she spend most of her time piloting the Piller of Autumn (before Halo) and part of her duties would involve fireing on enemey ships. Granted these would have been Covenant ships, but I find it hard to believe that any military would make a AI that is incapable of fireing on humans. Even is Cortona could fire on the covanet the second part of the first lay is "or let any human come to harm through inaction." This would meen that she would be forced tostop whatever she was doing and focus all her resources in saving every last marine that ever goes into battle, and not stop until their out of danger or dead. This would be highly inpractical when she has a more important task to do, such as blowing a covanent worship out of the sky.

You guys need to real Isaac asimov's books, the stories that the movie "I, Robot" is loosely based on. You'll realise exactly what the 3 laws entail and why the events that happen in the movie isn't strictly true to the asimov universe.

Also, bear in mind that the way AI behaves in SciFi is entirely different to the way computers and programming actually work. Sure, it's futuristic scifi, but there has to be some grounding in reality (for it to be credible in a more techologically aware society)

If a computer posesses all of these qualities, is it real, is it human?

If you remove the medium, then we would be really close. I mean hardware is a just un-organic brain if you look at it. I mean we haev neurons that transmit electro-chemical signals netween each other, and they have relays and transistors that transmit electical signals. If you somehow transfered someones conciousness to a computer would they be human? I mean one of the few differences between humans and A.I. is the medium. Thats what I think.
