Well, I was just catching up on some Halo 1 SP, and I engaged in one of my favourite pastimes: Grunt-Bashing.

Now, grunt-bashing is fun, because they shoot blood with each hit, so you go up to a corpse, pull out a fast-melee weapon, and then start smacking. The results will be a blue ground in the local area. Very fun. :P

A problem with this, though, is that it slows the game down MASSIVELY. By MASSIVELY, I mean the game lags enough that 10 seconds can pass between action on the controller and reaction in-game can complete. I think the reason this happens is because they loaded a sprite that modifies the colour of a random blotch of texture, this actually sits on top of the grass texture, and tells the texture's colour to run through a filter wherever the two are in contact, or something along those lines. It could also just be a loaded texture that sits ontop of the base texture.

The thing with that, is that the XBox doesn't like having 25 sprites or 'upper textures' to load with every cycle, so it slows down. I don't know whether Bungie has anticipated and compensated for this in H2, but I hope they have. I have a few ideas (ie. just make a series of textures appear, progressively larger/bloody, and the stage of texture is dependant upon a variable of how many times the chief has bashed the little covie.) It wouldn't (shouldn't?) be that hard to implement a fix to this problem - and I think they likely have. But now, in the bug-fixes, they might be ready to look at something small like that. Just wondering.

Anyone have any suggestions on who I should mail about something along these lines?

Dont know. Pm Frankie? But that is most likely fixed in Halo 2.

Heh. Not quite. It's called a decal. And the problem is that you're making Halo sort through the alphas of several decals sitting directly on top of each other. Any game with decals like Halo's would have that problem.

I don't think that you should contact bugnie at all on howto fix soemthing, that is just rude and arrogant. That's saying that you "know" more than the pro's.

well put, and along with that; I think they've known that problem for a very long time and already worked on it for h2

I like Elite Bashing. its right, it slows things down, but its not a problem. I hate it when in a game I made a bloody battle that all the blood just disappeared. or like i had with the warthog in Halo 1, that the pieces of stone under the tires just disappeares after 3 seconds, instead of rolling all the way down making a mountain of little stones and ground.

but what other game include that... so it is just a small thing. its nothing big. but it would be a great asset to have it in halo 2. details make a game, or breaks it. on a p3 733, you cant have that much room for details so I understand the problem the Bungie people had/have.

One way to stop that happening in Halo 2 is to not hit corpses so much! Problem solved!

Okay, I'm sorry for offending Deano and zachthebeaver, I didn't know my attempt to help Bungie as a loyal and ignorant fan would leave such a traitorous stench..

Shishka: There's still got to be a way to fix something like that. For example, when a new decal is created, run a quick process that enlarges the old one, and drops the new one. Of course, I'm likely entirely mistaken on what the concept of a decal is, could you explain it a little better?

(Note: I am looking around to find a fair definition of it, but it looks like I'm gonna have to sort through info.. The definitions I get are for real decals, but I'm not sure how inking a clear material on a glue base quite translates to a simulated world, again I ask for clarification, please?)
