Similar to how Recon cleaned up forum stickies into a single thread, would it not be an idea to have a kind of sticky-based directory for chapters? I know word of mouth has certainly sufficed up till now, but there are an awful lot of good specialised chapters out there that many members [including myself I'd wager] just don't know about.

I was imagining a structure as such:

Bungie.net Utilities
* Chapter Founders - Open Membership
* Theme Masters - Open Membership

Politics
* Body Politic - Approval Required

General Discussion
* The Black Chapter - Open Membership

Though obviously the list would be larger than just the smattering of groups I'm a member of. The line would pretty clearly have to be drawn at including clan-based chapters, and perhaps those whose membership is tiny and whose 'domain' overlaps several more successful chapters. Indeed, it doesn't have to be particularly exhaustive at all - just enough so to allow newer members the chance to find chapters specific to their interest.

In a way the Chapter Spotlight could actually do the job of the above proposal, however it is rather out of the way for most members to find, and it hasn't been updated in... umm... yeah... even though I did try to get Sketch's permission to write new spotlights weekly [alas, no reply to the PM as of yet :S].

What do you guys think?

Well, it's not a bad idea, but I can imagine many chapters being listed, since there are so many out there... It kind of leaves the other groups out.

For example, under "General Discussion," you listed "The Black Chapter." The thing is that there are plenty of chapters that allow you to talk about anything. So, it kind of leaves the other chapters out.

A sort of chapter index would be a good idea with the index relating to the chapters profile and description. So if your looking for a myth chapter you could look you the index and see any chapter with myth in the profile or description.

That's certainly true, though I was only using those chapters I was a member of as examples. I suppose membership and chapter 'renown' would be the measure of whether or not to include a specific chapter - ultimately that's subjective... however I do think all our moderators have a good enough grasp of the B.net scene to make those decisions for us.

I think the only issue is choosing which groups to add in. If there were a council this would quite easily be the big thing that they could do. Weekly Spotlights to eventually develop a full fledged Chapter Index.

I'd definitely help out with it. Researching the chapters, reviewing, writing up etc. It would be fun.

Maybe you could just add in chapters that win COTW in CF.

PS, I would be willing to help make it as well.

Besides, since both Body Politic and the Black Chapter are owned and operated by mods, it makes them somewhat more 'official'.

If you could aquire a system that automatically adds and removes chapters as soon as they are created or deleted. That'd be nice. I know of a website that has a system much like this.

How about this:
When a founder creates a group, a new function is put into place where the founder chooses the cateogry of the chapter such as:
* Halo CE
* Halo 2
* Myth
* Or many others

The founder can also provide a small, detailed summary of the exact nature of the group such as:
* Halo 2 Strategies and Tactics
* Halo 2 Fanfics
This could happen or there could be sub-categories within the main categories that would have the same effect. Doing this would allow the chapter index to be completely automated, and would require little upkeep time or effort. I would suggest having a member limit, though. Example: a group would not be listed until 50 members have joined, or something like that. This would weed out the inactive and dead groups.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

I disagree Ranger, that would discourage the growth of small, but good chapters. For example, my chapter is not inactive or dead, but it only has 29 members. The only reason that I bring it is up is because numbers aren't anything, and it should be included in the Chapter Directory since it's the only Myth chapter on the Column...
Anyway, a Chapter Directory would be great, but I think we can rule out the possibility of it being entirely automated, there is no way that a program can decide what chapters are good. Unless it included every chapter, and then broke them down by category. Which would also be good.

Yea, those ideas were just general, the 50 was just an idea, I agree with you as well, the smaller groups should also be included. What I'm trying to do with the number limits is phase out the smaller, dead groups, becuase there are thousands of groups in the 7th Column, and it would get somewhat tiring looking through all of them to find one that you are looking for.
