I switch teams all the time. but, keep in mind, I also try to play games that have auto balance on. I switch teams because my team refuses to work AS a team, or because they are a group of weapon hogging jerks who will just as likely TK you for goodies as get themselves killed after they TK you...and give the goody to the opposition.
But nineteen times out of twenty, I switch teams because the opposition has fewer people. I switch to keep the game fair, as everyone should if they decide to switch teams.
yeah. I know the type you're talking about. I'm also usually glad to be rid of them if my team is losing. Most of the time, such people aren't worth the effort to gripe at. and as they see their stats go down, they leave quickly, no matter what team they're own.
I've been so out matched (in a non-autbalanced game) as to have a 4 on 1 difference beteween players, and been happy for it. Like you said, the people (mostly kids, i agree) who do this don't know better. But that's not all they don't know:
they don't know that teamkilling is on and when they throw that helpful nade at me, they're slaughtering the fellow with the shotgun that i'm dancing around (along with his friend). They don't know how to drive, so they have a naughty tendency to hop into a hog and straight line right into the path of...my, who put that nade in the road?
And they have a nasty habit of never supporting their teammates when they need it.
So, while teamswitchers can give the opposition a numerical advantage, i don't worry about them too much...most of the time.
