I dont know if this has been talked about yet if so just ignore and lock and if you flame me your going down.

Is it possibly that bungie would take down the graphics a little bit so the online line play would work faster and have less lag??

the online doesnt have any lag...they tested already and said so...with the current graphics...oh..the magic of bump mapping....anyways you should read the weekly updates, they tell a lot about the progress of the game

EDIT:
and why would you want to lower graphics anyways....man thats one of the best things the HALO games have...besides gameplay, storylines, etc..etc....anyho they work fine in multi believe me they'll make it perfect both off line and online..

I am pretty sure they have worked a lot on the networking code and stuff so there is no lag. But graphics are only a minimum part of the online lag, it is more because of the servers/network coding. But that is what beta test is for, to test all does kind of stuff.

well think of it this way: at least the graphics aren't as good as doom 3's or else you could only have 4 players. actually though i heard people have doom3 8 player servers

true true....you wont notice the difference between the online and offline graphics...well...mayvbe a little...they'll probly make the map surrounding use less polygons....again bump mapping....Halo used this on the maps i believe (read it somewhere) in halo 2 they will be using it on the characters as well...like DOOM 3.

There is no lag. Bungie is using Bump-Mapping. It reduces lag completly.

reason why doom 3 probly lags with more than 8 players would be for the lighting effects..etc..that halo doesnt use as much. the graphics between the two are the same...actually i think halo 2 has a bit ...tiny bit more details than doom3..but..i dunno haven played either yet..so we shall wait

The new way they are doing graphics is awesome, haloman456! It's a revalutionary new technology called bump-mapping. It allows for better graphics with a HUGE lag reduction. Basically with bump-mapping, it makes a map of the model that instantly reacts to light to make real-time shadows that appear instantly (as in, without the aid of a script to add shadows) onto the character model. It provides a way to make better looking models with less polygon count. It allows for more detail in all character models (this includes human models, guns, vehicles, rocks, everything!), no need to run certain scripts, and lots of other things. There may be new options to turn off some additional graphics (such as moving clouds, swaying trees, etc.) to reduce lag if your connection isn't that strong. But as it is now, detail is not an issue of lag in Halo 2 (Finnaly I can do good on XBL [instead of on XBC, lol]).

My question is. Assuming all the testing has been done in-house or in region, how well will the game perform over longer distances. I would assume it would sitll be pretty good but what if you feel the need to school some Australians?

yes they will tone down the graphics a bit, happens with mostly every online game.

  • 08.05.2004 7:55 PM PDT

They said that graphics have to be toned down for multiplayer just like in every other multiplayer game but that doesn't mean that they are gonna look bad!

im thinking the character graphics will stay the same..and the maps will be made with less lighting and a lot of bump mapping

they are reducing graphic quality but not by lowering polycounts, they are taking out the self shadowing engine in oniline multiplayer, and likely a few other small special effects we won't notice...

well actually alot of people noticed the buttugly florescent lightbud they called a plasma sword... but im guessing that would be the worst thing.
