story from baton rouge

This is an email from a friend of mine at LSU. He is a student SID in their office and is telling the story he is currently going through....For everyone's information, the "PMAC" is the Pete Maravich Assembly Center where the LSU basketball teams and other sports play. The "Dungeon" is the practice court which is below the main basketball floor.

I don't have any words except that this is a very, very sad situation......

Subject: The PMAC will never host an important event like it did tonight
Little did I know what I would be doing following Hurricane Katrina's aftermath but as I type right now, there won't be a more gratifying or more surreal experience I went through tonight. We went up to the office today and held a press conference regarding the postponement of the game and it was the right decision. As the PMAC and Field House are being used as shelters we decided as an office to do everything we could to help the situation.
At first, we were just supposed to make copies of this disaster relief form for all of the people. The copiers will never print a document more important than that. It's weird. Nearly 12 hours ago we were running off copies of game notes for a football game that is now meaningless. We printed the copies and carried them over to the Field House at 6:30 p.m. I wouldn't leave the area for another 8 hours.
On the way back to the PMAC in a cart, it looked like the scene in the movie Outbreak. FEMA officials, U.S. Marshalls, National Guard, and of course the survivors. Black Hawks were carrying in victims who were stranded on roofs. Buses rolled in from N.O. with other survivors. As Michael and I rode back to the PMAC, a lady fell out of her wheelchair and we scrambled to help her up.
We met Coach Miles and Coach Moffiit in the PMAC to see all the survivors and it was the view of a hospital. Stretchers rolled in constantly and for the first time in my life I saw someone die right in front of me. A man rolled in from New Orleans and was badly injured on his head. 5 minutes later he was dead. And that was the scene all night. What did we do, we started hauling in supplies. And thousands of boxes of supplies. The CDC from Atlanta arrived directing us what to do.
One of the U.S. Marshalls was on hand so the supplies could not become loot. I asked him what his primary job was. He serves on the committee of counter terrorism, but once he saw of the disaster, he donated his forces to come help. He said the death toll could be nearing 10,000. It was sickening to hear that.

After unloading supplies, I started putting together baby cribs and then IV poles. Several of our fball players and Big Baby and Tasmin Mitchell helped us. At the same time, families and people strolled in. Mothers were giving berth in the locker rooms. The auxiliary gym "Dungeon" was being used as a morgue. I couldn't take myself down there to see it.
I worked from 8 pm until 2:45 am. Before I left three more buses rolled in and they were almost out of room. People were standing outside, the lowest of the low from NO. The smells, the sights were hard to take.
A man lying down on a cot asked me to come see him. He said,"I just need someone to talk to, to tell my story because I have nobody and nothing left. He turned out to be a retired military veteran. His story was what everybody was saying. He thought he survived the worst, woke up this morning and the levees broke. Within minutes water rushed into his house. He climbed to the attic, smashed his way through the roof and sat there for hours. He was completely sunburned and exhausted. Nearly 12 hours later a chopper rescued him and here he was.
We finished the night hauling boxes of body bags and more were on the way. As we left, a man was strolled in on a stretcher and scarily enough he suffered gunshots. The paramedic said he was shot several times because a looter or a convict needed his boat and he wouldn't give it to him. Another man with him said it was "an uncivilized society no better than Iraq down there right now." A few minutes later he was unconcious and later pronounced dead. I then left as they were strolling a 3 year old kid in on a stretcher. I couldn't take it anymore.
That was the scene at the PMAC and it gives me a new perspective on things. For those of you who I haven't been able to get in touch with because of phone service, I pray you are safe. Send me an email to let me know. God bless.

If Bungie is serious about helping the Flood Relief, why not take up an offering from us, forum junkies and give a love offering similar to the ones taken up in churches. Instead of each of us giving a dollar or so to the REd Cross, Bungie could take the money, and mabey even add some themselves to give a lump sum. That would show that the gaming community cares about the Relief efforts! Just an idea.......

I've been working free overtime at work to help supply some IV's to the cause, this way the company can afford to donate more of what I make. Will donate when I get paid tomorrow.

Yeah DblGypsyspell is right. That would get more people motivated too. It would be better than just a dollar or so coming in here or there. its great to read about what people have already done to help the victims of the hurricane but im also interested in what we can still do for them. Maybe if bungie said for every 500 dollors put into the bungie Flood relief fund (this is just an example) they could add 100 or so to it. this would incourage people to give their money instead of just thinking that their small ammount wouldnt help. although 5 or 10 dollors from one person doesnt seem like it would help 5 or 10 dollors from anyone willing to help all over the the USA and even the world, would add up fast.not only could this be the gamming comunities chance to show how much we care, but it would also be a good example of companies like bungie reach out and help their fellow people in times of need (although they hake already done a good job of showing that by starting this forum and getting people aware of the needs of the victoms in the first place)

I myself would be willing to donate any extra money i have (although being 15 i dont have much) and i can always forget about that xbox360 i was hoping for. Helping people in need is always better than sitting on my butt in front of a Tv all day.

Guys,

My name is Robbie and I am from Pensacola, FL. Last year, we got destroyed from Hurricane Ivan. Now, I know it may be hard to believe, but our town looked just like New Orleans and the coast of Mississippi does now. It was devistating. Though our damage was not as widespread as this current disaster, it was still quite a site. Ivan was the 3rd worse disaster in U.S. History, and now we have Katrina, which tops the charts.

When something like this happens, it's the town suffering from the tragedy, literally becomes a 3rd world country. When Ivan hit, it was 3 weeks before I even saw the first pictures of what had happened. We didn't know what was going on, where to get food, gas, water, what was happening around the Nation, was there another Hurricane coming? etc;...No one knows whats going on when your in that situation. But the only thing you do know is...there are people all around out there helping.

Your contribution, though small, is huge. During our time of crisis, me and my family survived off of 1 womans generosity. She drove up and said, "Here....here is some water and bread..." That water and bread was enough to last 2 weeks..enough to survive.

In New Orleans and Mississippi, it's a life or death situation. It seriously is. It's a scary scene, and they can't make it unless you and I help. Me and my family couldn't make it without help.

So do what you can...pitch in....Trust me, every little bit helps.

If you can't help, then the least you could do is pray. I get annoyed because I hear on TV that it's going to take months to rebuild. No....it will take years. It's been 1 year since our storm, and still, people don't have their homes, our beach is still destroyed, our community is still rebuilding. So please, do what you can, and pray that life will improve for these people.

I live down here in texas, im stuck with school down here but my teacher has direct relations with most of the people down in reliant park... I write to the people in there and just try to make friends with some of them and just talk and calm most of them down. I was told they have barrels of food down there and plenty of water.

They really need baby supplies and clothing because these people have NOTHING.

Well I haven't sent in my money yet, but I want to.

I have a friend on xbox Live (Artimous), who was my previous clan member, who was caught in the hurricane (He lived right in New Orleans), he said there was no way to get out of the state because evacuation would take two days to make it out, and by then the hurricane would have hit him. He said he would have to ride it out, and now I know that they won't have power for another 2-3 months and it must suck to not be able to play your favorite game (hint: Halo 2). I am just hoping he made it out without serious damage, even if his house was destroyed, I hope he is fine.

update from my guys down there the site has been changed its now
http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/
check it out
but heres what just popped up:
4:00 pm
Been Busy.
My screw-up earlier with respect to diesel preparations has been rectified. We've got 18 drums on the floor level awaiting the next truck delivery today or tomorrow. We had to empty all drums into the tanks, move them down there, work on the building's small emergency power generator to get the freight elevator working (this included hand-pumping a couple of drums of fuel into the tank), and a whole lot of other crap.... Not gonna bore you with the mundane.

Then we had to take a router down to city hall to try to get the city rolling on their internet. That included wading through water. God, the city is a mess when you head down Poydras that way. The Superdome looks like the Jenin refugee camp. God help this city. Whether or not it ought to be rebuilt is secondary to the real issue: can it be rebuilt? Looking around, I wouldn't know where or how to start. Good luck with that.

To punish and enslave.

It's cool seeing everyone come together and talk about a subject without flamming each other. I've been watching CNN all day, what a disaster.

yea its really sad that new orelans is flooded. its going to take them 30 days minimum to pump the water out but first they have to rescue the people from their houses. Then after the pump the waters out they going to have to see if poeple can live their becuase all of the contanminated water and dieases out their. I live only 30 minutes away from new orleans and it was horrible they had winds up to 110 MPH where i live and i just got my power back on today. I didnt have power for 4 days.i left my town and went to texas where some of my family stayed which only takes us 4 hours but it took us 11 hours to get their because everyone was trying to get out. Alot of poeple that are getting rescued some of them are coming where i live. I might go volenteer to go help out at the shelters.

I'm really depressed over this.

Seeing homeless people in the norm is saddening anyway...also, 2 of my XBL friends that I happen to know live in Florida haven't been online since the hurricane. That really hurts, and it makes me think of how I take all of it for granted. I couldn't live without electricity for 4 months, I know that.

Well, seeing as how I'm too young to get a job, my parents donated money for me, took me shopping for canned goods and other non-perishables, and thanks to them, I've been able to help.

We have to band together!

It is incredibly dissapointing that a real person would say that.

How could you say that? You're comfortable enough to condemn a country because America "never helps you?"

And no "hot babe" would come near a sick bastard like you. You and your 'friends' will hopefully be alone when you laugh you ass off.

To those who called me a fool for not reserving HALO 2 & 3: Walmart; 11:30 p.m. - 2nd and 6th in line; wife and I are at home playing HALO 2 &3 by 12:05 & 12:15 - HA HA HA!!!

I live in Clinton MS -- Most think that only the cost has suffered... though they and NO has suffered most of all, everyone must realize that half of MS, AL, and a lot of LA are without power.

That seems hard to believe, but Jackson wasn't hit very hard (a few trees down; sustained winds of 20-30mph) but most of Jackson is still in the black -- (Day 4), Here is an up to date list of cities who have 50% power or LESS:

Vicksburg, Jackson, McComb, Brookhaven, Tylertown, McGee, Mendenhall, Hattiesburg, and al coastal cities are mostly gone. These are Mississippi "major" cities - News reports are still coming in that it will be up to 3 weeks for some of these cities to be fully back online.

Gasoline, ice, bread, and water are priorities down here. Reports are coming in that in Atlanta a gallon of gas is already $6. I don't know if this is true, but it does put things in perspective. Gas lines here in Clinton are a 3-4 hour wait. People are literally getting stranded. I have 10 people in my house right now. My brother and sister in law (+3 kids) are from Hattiesburg. They can't get enough gas to get home, and even if they did, there is no water, electricity or phone service there yet.

I heading a local supply hub to send stuff down to the needier people south of us, but we can't get in touch with anyone in any of those cities.... needless to say, it is HORRIBLE. Someone mentioned above about how something like this basically turns the place a third world country... He's absolutely correct. We were SOOOO lucky we have internet, water, and electricity and WARM FOOD - Many don't have anything left ... Many have lost family...

So, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS!!!!! Those of you who have cable or internet - look at the pictures and then think of the stuff "we" complain about everyday... There's a valuable lesson in there somewhere - find it.

News here says that it will take 2-4 months to repair the levees good enough to start using the pumps... so 30 days probably wont cut it.

"We are out here like pure animals. We don't have help," the Rev. Isaac Clark, 68, said outside the New Orleans Convention Center, where corpses lay in the open and he and other evacuees complained they were dropped off and given nothing – no food, no water, no medicine."

very grim indeed.
