I'll be on my own side.

If it were to be implemented, and we are rewarded for being active and contributing to the community, would we start out on the same level as spammers and people like that? It would be strange for say, Sigma or Maka to come back, and find that his karma is at a spammer's level.

Any thoughts?

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Spammer would be a negative Karma level I hope. I think we should all start out level, except the mods. They shouldn't be able to get Karma, because then people would feebly attempt to bribe them with Karma. It would be pitiful. However, the mods should be able to give it. Other then them, everyone should have the same karma to start out. Then, mabye at the higher Karma levels, you would get more points to give? Just a thought,

I agree about not being able to karma-fy mods. But, they should have more points to give.

That would be cool. This would also tie in well with the exclusive forums Sketch mentioned. Exclusive forums for people of a certain karma level. Spammers of course, shouldnt be able to access them, thus making a good place for discussion among the more active and helpful members of our community.

maybe mods should have an infinite number of points to give? I'm sure they wouldnt abuse it, so it would be perfect so the mods can give out karma whenever its deserved, and not have to send I O U's to people(not that they would do it)

I think that's a good idea.

what about negative points? like maybe, after a certain amount of neg-mods, you cant post? Not so much where you can be banned by karma abusers. or maybe normal people can neg-mod you down to a certain point, and if the mods feel you deserve more neg-mods only they can go further and ony they can reach the point where you cant post.

Neg-mods means "negative mod points". It's commonly used on the RvB forums, where this system is currently in use.

Well, it would be kinda weird to see a PM that says "I owe you _ mod points. Wait until someone says I'm cool."

If the forums ara anything like the comments section, I consider it a terrible failure. I've seen comments like "Great episode" get modded down (-3 lame!), and then, right below it, someone will post something dumb like "Woo!" and get modded +5 funny?!
This would especially be a problem in the flood. Have we all already forgotten that the place is run by the "family"

Good point. There would be people who abuse the karma system. There always is. But, does that mean that the system shouldnt be implemented? I'm sure there's a way to counter system abusers.

Karma is basically a thumbs up or down system essentially.

And to the person who posted before jackalsniper, that was all over my head.

Why not? We do that with cookies already.

You do? I haven't gotten any. Sad. Well, I guess I'm just to new to the forums.

Karma is a sytem that gauges how you use the site. It's influenced by everything you do. You have mod points to give people good or bad karma depending on how they act and post. As you gain positive karma points, your level increases, and vice-versa. When you mod someone, you can choose what you wanna give them.

They have the following on RvB.

+1 Cool
+ 1 Funny
+1 Zing
+1 Ditto

-1 WTF
-1 Noob
-1 Flamebait
- 1 Lame

On RvB you can mod people's posts, comments, journals, and pictures(they have a profile system kinda like Myspace.) They all go towards your overall karma level. You gain more respect and privileges as it increases, like you cannot create a topic until you get to lvl 20.

But ... what's going to stop people from giving me a bad karma report just because we've had a disagreement or a dispute?

  • 08.31.2005 6:29 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

like i said, there will always be abusers, and on that note, we should start discussing potential counter-measures to that.

I'm thinking, maybe if someone is being a douche, that they can no longer mod people? also, people like to give a friend all their points, and then have them do the same to increase their karma rank(i have no clue why they would do this). What they do on RvB is take away your mod points and put you at level -1. i'm sure Recon and Shishka would love to do that to someone.

As a matter of fact....what's going to stop people from making new accounts just so they can give EVERYONE bad karma reports? Sorta like spammers but.... karma-ers.

  • 08.31.2005 6:33 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

I dont know how we would do that, because RvB does NOT allow you to create an account with a free email address, like gmail or yahoo.

maybe there should be mods hired to keep track of the karma system, to make sure it isnt abused.

Wait...explain the karma system to me. You get points from people and you can give points to people? So if someone is being an idiot you can take a karma point from them?

lf that's how it works then, l think this is THE most stupid thing l've ever heard of. People are to immature to handle things like that. They'd abuse it beyond belief. l think a ranking system would be better. lt would cause arguments but it wouldn't effect the way you're noticed on Bungie. All it takes is a few idiots to completely screw up your recognition. At least with the ranks your fate isn't in the hands of idiots. People might be like, "Gruntz?!!? OMGWTF jo00 no0b! You don't know anything!" But so what? Just ignore them. They don't know what they're talking about. l think this is the best way to go.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

The simplest and best solution would be that the mods have unlimited positive and negative Karma points to give out as they see fit. Or if the mods have a limited amount for some reason, then the Master Ninjas would have unlimited points. Then once somebody reaches a certain level they can give out their own Karma points (a limited amount obviously, such as one per day). After a while, there would be many members who can give out their own points, but none of these members would be spammers or people who do not deserve the ability to give out points.

This also insures that a duplicate accounts would not be able to give out points. One good way to prevent abuse would be to not allow normal members who can give out points to give points (positive or negative) to the same person twice in a row. Then besides the ability to give out your points, Bungie could also give users with a certain amount of whatever benefits they think would be suitable for valuable members of the community (exclusive forums, custom avatars, whatever).

no you cannot take points from someone. and you have a limited amount of points to give. actually it would work quite well, because spammers would waste all their points neg-modding people, and they would not be getting any more because spammers generally dont get positive karma points.

When someone gives you a +1 something, you gain that point, for you to use however you like. so say youre out of mod points, and someone gives you +3 Funny(you can give multiple points). You now have 3 points to use how you want.

Ghandi's idea is good. Maybe once the mods give us enough positive karma we get our own. Similar to the RvB system, but not exactly the same.

And how would l want to use them? Why not keep all the karma for myself? Maw haw haw! No really. Why not?

  • 08.31.2005 6:57 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

keeping them to yourself? pointless, unless youre someone who's points are sought after(like Recon's mod point would be more valuable than my mod point). But i think it would work out nicely.

I dont really do that. but it is funny.

Is there any discrepancies in the system if it were to be implemented this way? I want to hear them so that we can maybe come up with a solution, and hopefully Achronos or Skecth will like it.
