I was thinking of taking one of my older computers (which probably can't run Halo, but will run the server) and stuffing multiple instances of a Halo DS on it. I was wondering, though... will these slow down my internet connection? Or just the computer? I don't mind it slowing down the computer, as it will be running almost 24x7 without me using it, but I DO mind it slowing down my internet connection...

"stuffing multiple instances of a Halo DS on it"

What did you mean by this?

he meant running multiple servers on one machine.

Of course a DS will slow down your connection. If people are actually on your server, it will consume some of your total bandwidth, therefore slowing down the connection on your other computers.

Running more than one instance of a halo DS at the same time will slow down your computer. You can support a couple more players on one DS than the total # of players on several DS instances.

Hmmm, okay, thanks guys! I think I will minimize my servers down to two instances.

What are the system specs of the PC you are using for the DS?

You could get away with 2-4 DS instances and not get a major performance hit.

Question:

We split our internet connection between 3 devices. My dad's workstation, the PS2, and the family computer. This shouldn't bog down the connection too much if all of the devices are connected and active at the same time, should it?

What's your connection like? There's a difference if it is fast, 3Mbit cable or slower, 256K DSL.

2 DS's is fine on a fast cable line if they aren't both 16 player servers. Otherwise you'll start hitting 200+ pings for everyone, which can ruin gameplay. I'd try one out first and see how the lag is.

Yes, it will bog down the connection if all of the devices are active at the same time. I split my 256 Kbps DSL between two computers: Mine via Ethernet, and my parents' via 802.11g WiFi. If my parents start surfing the net while i'm playing on bungie-ctf, my pings can shoot up from the 60-100 range to the 600+ range. Not fun at all.
