I witnessed Kartina passed over here on Miami, and I gotta say that by the looks of it, what we suffered was the equivalent of a scratch. All that happened except for Homestead (which flooded), all the storm did was knock down every third tree in the street and parks as well as killing power for a week for some residents (put me out for four days). I've never seen a Hurricane sack a town so horrible that the water swallowed homes almost completely...even the dead can't get a break! Did you see the coffins were unearthed by the flooding? Unreal..
I have to admit that by the way things are going right now in New Orleans. I am ashamed that people are turning against each other. There has been looting, rapes, all sorts of problems that have gone unchecked for a while. Hopefully with the arrival of the National Guard, things will calm down and order will be restored. Still, I cannot believe that anyone would use the opportunity to kick people when they're down. New York turned out to be much more civilized than this during 9/11 (or is that because the media did not reveal such information?). Supplies aren't what they need most; they need to be protected from thieves who rob them of all they have left. Stopping that will save lots of people and should help recovery time significantly.
With all the ensuing chaos out there, the people in New Orleans are drinking water directly from the floodwaters. I implore you not to do this before either chemically treating this water or boiling it because that is how people will get sick and more casualties will arise from it. I know it may be difficult to boil water on the rooftops, but you must understand that impatience for water will eventually doom yourself to a painful death from disease. If anyone has a feasible solution, please let them know. They need the help, and even if we have a large amount of supplies ready to be sent to them, many will not be able to get them for some time. They will be on their own for a while and solutions are what they need most.
Please understand that this is my opinion and although you may not like it, I ask you to respect it. I accept constructive criticism, but don't stretch it too harshly without cause.
By the way, sorry for posting on such a massive collection of words. Thank you for spending the time to read this.
