Now that the spam filter is here, I think it would be great to have a Post Count.

Anyone else?

The real question is: Is it really necessary to have one?

Even though anti-spam measures have been inforced, you'd be surprised to see how far one person would go just to get the most posts.

And I believe the answer is: No.

It isn't really, I admit, but it's a nice little add on for forums.

Even of 10,000 people suddenly came in here and said "yes", it wouldn't mean anything. Achronos has put his foot down, there will be no post counter.

Maybe it is too late.

The only point to a post count that I can see is self gratification, and I think most people get enough of that already...

There is another discussion going on about the post counter: Here.

Even if we have a spam filter, a post counter would be... useless.

Seventh Column Contests

not required. the forums are better left out without the post count.

There used to be a post count, and now it's gone. No way in hell will they bother to bring it back.

I'll be on my own side.

True, the old post counter didnt really do much for the site. Nobody really needs it. To quote an HBO tagline: "You are not your post count."

It'd just contradict everything the karma system is to stand for. User quality is a lot more important than user quantity; or more accurately, the quality of posts is more important than the quantity. Just imagine. A Bnet with an excuse for people to be stupid, arrogant brats. It doesn't bear much thought. I don't want some New Mombasa spammer with more posts than me to come in my face with "i r Teh VetEz u cn stfu".

tru7h.

People brag, it's the way of the world. People are constantly competing to be the best, to do better in society. Exactly the same will happen here with all the bragging goodness thrown in.

Alot of people don't know that we used to have a counter, but due to the imaturity of certian people we lost it. Now we have 10 times the members than before and most are imature. Imagine the problems that can arise from having a post counter.

However, I think I personal counter that is rewarded to mature users would be nice. I would really like to know how much post I have collected over the years. I remember Sketch mentioning something about rewarding mature/active members of the community with privlages. Maybe this can be considered?

That might take too much coding.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

It would cause an increase in spam in every forum. People would wost one or 2 words in each thread, they would post in every thread in every forum.

Its a bad idea for a community this big.

  • 09.04.2005 7:12 AM PDT

Agreed. People would simply post in order to increase their post-count. It would become a competition.

  • 09.04.2005 7:29 AM PDT

Nerd Rage - It makes the internet go 'round.

Yeah people would just spam to be the highest posting wanker. But I'd settle for a post tracker where I can search through my previous posts, I hate forgetting which forums I post in.
