so, to prepare my self for the awesomeness thats going to be halo:reach i have promised myself that i am going to play thought all the old halo games on legendary. to honor the greatness of the bungie development team and what not.

then i realized... Halo:CE legendary is like 10 times harder then what i remembered it too be.

i have been playing for a week and a half now and i still have not gotten thought the first part of the second level.

i have resorted to using covy weapons and the magnum to noob combo the pain in the ass elite's shields... but that gets me only so far.

am i the only one here that thinks halo:CE legendary is harder then the rest of the halo series or is it just me?

P.S. some tips for flawless cowboy would be much appreciated... the grunts keep zerg-rushing me with great efficiency.

FINALLY! that took long enough...

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

Halo 2's was pretty hard.

It really depends on what you mean by "hard." Halo 2's is FAR more frustrating to work through, and even Halo 3's has a few moments of some difficulty.
However, this is mostly due to lame situations where you get stuck until you find the "right" way to get by an area (ie memorize the locations and points at which jackal snipers become a threat), at which point it becomes cake. Enemies are predictable, mostly frightening simply because they do a ton of damage. Half the time when you die, it's more or less because of things out of your control.

Halo 1's has me smashing my head against the wall the least, but mostly because it's fair. When you die, it's either because you made a mistake or because the enemies did something totally ninja and outsmarted you. It is a game that really pushes you and tests you through enormous varieties of combat situations which tend not to have any particular way by which they have to be won, so long as you approach them intelligently. In fact, Bungie accomodated well for players doing things out of what they had expected to be "ordinary"; take AotCR and its ability to be played just fine without using the tank, thanks to Bungie's decent ammo pack planning. Part of the difficulty probably has to do with how unique Halo 1 really is; very few games have situations where aggressive fighting can be rewarding for reasons other than incredibly fake devices that force you to fight quickly or else something bad happens (for the obvious example, the Silent Cartographer opening battle).

I'm inclined to say that Halo 2's is the hardest to get through, but Halo 1's is the most "challenging."

Nice to see someone doing the same thing as me before Reach comes out. I tried to start with Halo Wars, but I suck at RTS games and found myself running out of time.

Like Tupolev said, Halo 2's campaign is the most frustrating and, in my own opinion, it is the most difficult.

I love "Assault On The Control Room" because it loads you with a sniper and rocket lawnchair throughout 70% of the level if you explore it well enough. The one thing that pisses me off about Combat Evolved's campaign is that you always have to be on your heels when getting close to a door.

ALWAYS. If not, you'll be bull rushed quicker than a jockey in a ketchup suit. Sometimes they'll do a threesome on you. LOL.

As far as the first part of the "Halo" level is concerned, all you need is patience, spacing, a quick release, and some cover. If you get impatient, you'll die really fast. You're right to get a plasma weapon alongside the pistol; they'll take out Covenant shields quicker. Take out Grunts first, Jackals second, and Elites third. CONSERVE PISTOL AMMO. Try to run up to an Elite when he least expects it and throw a snowcone in his face.

At the beginning, try to take cover by the rocks. Move from rock to rock and pick off them off in the order explained above. When you get to the top of the base, phantoms will hit you from both sides. Throw snowcones on the walkways as they come up to the base. Make sure you space yourself far enough from the action.

Let me know if you need anymore help. I'm currently on 343 Guilty Spark myself.

P.S. If your having trouble with Jackals, use a plasma overcharge to take out their shield, then pop em in the face with a pistol.

5 years and counting on Bungie. I feel old and worthless.

Halo 1 is definitely the hardest, especially when you're low on health, once your shields are down, it takes probably 2 plasma bolts or 1 needle to kill. Once the Flood come in with their super-melee and their Human weapons, it makes it alot harder, and its almost impossible to go w/o a shotgun on the later levels with the Flood.

I'm Shaman. The one and only. If you think otherwise...Alpha..Mike...Foxtrot.

Halo:CE had such a frustrating campaign on legendary. It took me an hour to get through The Pillar of Autumn and then it was worse when I got to 343 Guilty Spark.

R.I.P. Halo 2 11/9/04-4/15/10
If you havn't played Halo 2 online than you are missing so much. Plus if you have played a good amount of Halo 2 online, I might have a better chance of listening to anything you say.

The only halo campaign I find hard on Legendary is Halo 2. Halo CE is a sinch. It was hard for me when I got it at 9 years old back when it came out in 2001. After getting good at Halo 2 on Xbox Live I went back to Halo CE on Legendary and I couldn't believe how easy it was. I got through what were once hard missions with no problem at all.

Same here. I went into AotCR thinking it was going to be easy. About 20 minutes later into AotCR, I realize it's freaking hard.

And most importantly, why it's so hard.

One reason is because the weapons and vehicles weren't very accurate.

Except for the Plasma Pistol bolt and overcharged bolt, the sniper, the rocket launcher, the Shotgun, and the Pistol, I rarely picked up or used the other available weapons (Plasma Rifle, Assault Rifle, Needler). Sometimes, I get a little pissed off with the Pistol, because of it's spread. The Scorpion cannon and Banshee bolt are terribly inaccurate. I find myself shooting at long distance enemies with the Scorpion only to miss them. The Banshee bolt, had it been more accurate, would have allowed you to hover over your enemies and kill them faster. And the Plasma Pistol overcharged bolt had terrible homing.

Another reason is the AI. Halo CE AI were clever, cunning, and superbly intelligent.

In Halo 3, enemies loved to throw grenades. They do this so many times (if Catch was turned on) that sometimes they accidentally stick themselves or their friend, and it was easy to just run past them since they wouldn't be shooting at you. Halo CE Elite Spec Ops had a habit of throwing grenades at you whenever you shot at them. And by default, they would shoot at you while you threw grenades.

Major Elites are freaking fast in Halo CE and it's very hard to land a overcharged bolt and then immediately headshot them. They're too smart to stand there when their shields are down.

Zealot Elites were made to be feared compared to the Brute Chieftain. The Brute Chieftain never berserked, making it more easier to kill it. Also, the Brute Chieftain could be assassinated. Zealot Elites are almost impossible to assassinate because of the range of their Energy Sword. Zealot Elites could leap melee you. Brute Chieftains could do that too, but you could jump on his head if you timed it correctly. Zealot Elites, had their armor been invulnerable to Needler needles and Plasma Grenade sticks, would have been very difficult to kill. They are faster than the Brute Chieftain and more terrifying.

Use plasma pistol bolts on Grunts if you want to save Pistol ammo. The Plasma Pistol bolt does around 16 to 20 damage in Halo CE and 10 damage in Halo 3, making it somewhat overpowered.

Well, Halo CE is clearly more difficult than Halo 3 (without skulls) and Halo 3 ODST. Your marines are easily killed and you have no invincible allies.

Halo 3 Legendary was very easy to complete without the skulls, except for Cortana, which caught me by surprise. If you plan and watch strategy videos before you actually attempt a level, it will be more easier to complete it. Also, you have Arbiter. He's very useful and will do most of the killing for you on certain levels, especially The Covenant. The Covenant should be renamed Arbiter's revenge.

Halo 3 ODST Legendary was easy since you could skip most of the battles.

I'm not sure about Halo 2, since I've never played it on Xbox, but I've played Halo 2 Vista and it's hard. Arbiter's shields go down real fast.

-Sic transit gloria mundi

Halo: CE was pretty easy to me. The only real challenge was persistance.

  • 07.28.2010 6:12 PM PDT

I found Halo 2 to be the hardest, simply because the enemies did so much damage compared to Halo: CE. One second of sustained fire and you're dead, whereas it'll take 3-5 seconds in Halo: CE.

I have to agree with everyone saying Halo: CE was more "challenging". It let us accomplish different tasks in multiple ways, and it didn't punish us for trying to push forward like Halo 2 did. And frankly, the inaccuracy of the weapons was a good thing; we had to develop strategies and work around that. We couldn't just sit back like in Halo 3 and pick things off one at a time with the BR. Plus, enemies always attacked us and didn;t give us the chance.

I've made it my life goal to never become too stressed. So if I appear to be doing nothing all the time and generally never working particularly hard on any task, that's my plan in action.

Well in the Legendary saga it goes...

1) Halo 2
2) Halo
3) Halo Wars
4) Halo 3
5) Halo 3: ODST

Huh?
The Scorpion cannon admitedly has some reticle spot matching issues, but even that's not all that bad and is certainly correctable for; and once you overcome that, the cannon has essentially perfect precision.

As for the banshee fuel rod gun, that's even better, since it doesn't suffer from the reticle position issue, and I believe it actually is perfectly spreadless.
Perhaps you aren't accounting for the arcing of the fuel rod well enough? If you aren't already doing it, I recommend thrust firing to drop bombs on enemies below. "Thrust firing" is when you move towards your target when you fire to increase the projectile velocity in that direction. For banshees, it means less necessary compensation for shot arc and a faster shot travel time. To thrust fire in a banshee, if you're doing low swooping attacks, just keep continuous movement up and you'll effectively be thrust firing. If you're just dropping bombs from above, let go of the left stick and start falling and fire your shot as you drop. Then use the reload time to regain lost altitude.

Friggin deal with it

Man, It's got ta be Halo 2 (hands down). The hardest part of that was trying to get through the bays on Cairo Station. After that, it wasn'tt too hard.

  • 07.29.2010 5:33 AM PDT

Halo 2, hands down.

Also, am I the ONLY person on the planet who finds Halo CE's Legendary campaign quite easy? It really is very easy. I don't get why people say it's so hard.

Try simulating recoil with the Pistol.

Usually, you aim at the Elite's body to help the charged bolt hit. That's why you have a difficult time hitting his head. But if you move the reticle up and shoot, then it will be easier.

Yeah, but I tend to find the Scorpion unreliable. I find sniping to be more faster and efficient.

Yeah, the Banshee Fuel Rod Gun is great, but I was talking about the Banshee bolt. I find it difficult to land shots with the Banshee bolts unless I'm closer to them. It's very time consuming when I shoot from far away.

Interesting. I didn't know thrust firing could apply to Halo CE Banshees. I thought it only worked with Halo 3 Wraiths. Thanks for the tips.

It's mostly because of the inaccurate weapons and inaccurate vehicles.

The only precise weapon was the sniper. The other weapons had at least 1 disadvantages (i.e. Plasma Pistol charged bolt wasn't very accurate compared to Neelder homing, Pistol had some spread, etc.).

Also, The Library had overwhelming Flood armies.

Will throw 2 cents and say...2. CE rewarded good thinking without penalty, and 3's Mythic Legendary feels like the previous two's Legendary. But, the multiplayerization of the games has to be taken into account...and...carry the three...yep, still 2.

  • 07.30.2010 6:27 PM PDT

I am responsible for dividing the Covenant. I shall end this war.

As far as Legendary goes, I'd say Halo 2 just cause of the frustration.

And Halo 2 Mythic is definitely a lot harder than Halo 3 Mythic.

GAZEBOS!

Oh I get by with a little help from my friends.....yeah...that's how I remember all the Halo games....grab a friend and do it up...one hides and the other is a Suicide Bomber...I used to watch my friend run at Elites with his AR blazing, then from a decent distance I would throw a plasma grenade on my buddies back let him suicide bomb the baddie...of course Halo 2 came along and ruined my fun...but Halo 3 and ODST brought it...Legendary was fun again.

I thought the same whenever I played that level but you just need a Plasma Pistol and use the noob combo. Helped me a lot against those Elites.
