All my friends have played Halo. All my family has played Halo. Everyone but i have played Halo. Why? I don't have an X-BOX. So, When Halo PC came around, I saved up enough money from couch diving and laundry raiding to buy it roughly six month's later. I bought it from wallmart, drove home, and installed it on my computer. Soon enough, i modified key bindings from the ridiculous WASD setting to my preferred. I click on Campaign, and start the game to notice HORRENDOUSLY SLOW FRAMERATES. I drop the grapics settings to the barest minimums, 640x480 on the resolution even, only to notice little change in performance. So, i come to the message boards seeking relief from these shackles and to actually enjoy my purchase.

So please, i beg any of you to come up with a way to increase framerates that won't cost more that 19 cents, two balls of pocket lint, and a quart of earwax.

I suppose you would like the specs to my frankenstein, here goes.

2.7 gig processor
512mb Ram
128MB videocard
Windows XP home edition
Direct X 9.0b
80gb Harddrive

What kind of video card? 128megs means diddly. As well, I sure hope that isnt a celeron, which I can garuantee it is (your processor). They can barely run office apps, let alone games! Just for good measure and a BRIEF glimpse of hope for you, follow this guide to the T: http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=review&dId=32 4. Oh yea, skip the reformat part, it isnt essential, but it is helpful if you have ACTUAL XP discs, not just the recovery disc. Hope this helps you a bit. God forbid if you want to play Doom3 or Far Cry.

Edit: woops, let_me_live, ya beat me to it. ;)

Many of the Nvidia cards were pwned by Halo when it was first released. On that note, do you have any of the patches installed? If no, go download the latest patch and install. Might help a bit. Also the latest version of Direct X, which is up to 9.0c, might improve your frames a bit.

When you play Halo, make sure you exit other applications and shut down any unneeded services that may be running in the background.

For more ideas on optimizing Halo, check this thread out, which has its share of good information in it, as well as good links to tutorials about optimizing Halo.

ok your cpu is the same one i have. Its actually a kick ass cpu, not bad for 80, but thats just me. . you have good ram, i have that same amount. and your cpu runs at 2.7 gigs mine runs at 2 .The reason why my rig plays halo very good is that i have a good video card. your Geforce FX 5200, im sorry to say, sucks for halo. If you are able to go and get a new video card. I recomend the 9600 xt. I have this card and it is very very good. Halo never has bad fps rates, unless you are in a high ping game in a gigantic battle. thats when fps goes down to about 20 to 25 fps, which is not bad at all. my catalyst version is 4.7. if you can you could get a 9800 xt which is around 50 % faster than the 9600 xt somewhere around there, not to sure exactly. But if you cant get a go, like leoht said, and get the newest drivers, patches, and the newest version of directX. if you get a new card then youll be ready to play hard, if you get better drivers and thing of that nature then i dont know if your fps will increase enough to where you can play decently.

Well, the 5200FX isnt that bad... Some people report that they can squeeze 800*600 high quality out of it. The big thing to turn off is specuklar (makes things REALLY shiny) and if you dont care, shadows. After tweaking your comp, I would recommend overclocking your gfx card to get a little bit more FPS. MAke sure your harddrive is defragmented regularly, and in general, keep crap off of your comp.

To overclock your video card, you will need a tool. Any tool will do. WTF did I just say? Ok, what you need is a software program that can unlock your cards BIOS and allow you to change the core and memory settings in the BIOS. My best suggestion would be to go to www.omegadrivers.net, and download the latest NVIDIA drivers he has. RAD-Linker is Omega's preferred OC'ing tool, and is built into the control panel. He gives step by step instructions on how to use them. I thought NVIDIA included OC'ing software with their drivers...?

well WTF. Mabye it was mobo's with NVIDIA's NFORCE series of chip on it that includes a Windows BIOS setup. Whatever, that kinda SuxXoRs (not that ATI does this, but it would be cool). But yah, go grab the drivers. As well as supplying an oc'ing toll with it, he does minor tweaks to improve overall performance (for ATI, he actually works "quasi" with them. He sends his drivers to them, and they fully support his efforts!)
