Subject: New 7th Column Hotness - Your Feedback Needed

Ok guys, the 7th Column is slowly making it's way towards a collision with the 'new hotness.' The migration of the old Column to the new site isn't that much farther away.

Now, with this new shift of something old to something new, and with the never ending influx of new members (which will only be magnified 100x when the game is released) there are some things that are going to have to change.

Now bear with me, this might be painful for some of you who have been around for a while, but it's something we have to do... namely, a change in the chapter databases you've come to know and love. First stop and look at what we have - the ability to create a boat load of custom databases, all with up to 1,000 rows, in every chapter. Now, multiply that by several hundred thousand... You can see that it starts to get real crazy real fast and we simply can't deliver the full range of possibilities we could when things were small. At least not now. We're a free site, with limited manpower and resources... it's ludicrous for us to try and support millions and millions of database entries...

Before anyone gets freaked out - WE WILL HAVE SOME SORT OF PLAN TO EITHER MIGRATE YOUR EXISTING CONTENT TO NEW DBS OR GIVE YOUR CONTENT BACK TO YOU IN SOME FORM OR ANOTHER. We won't just delete your work. =)

So, with that said, we're working on a plan to do as much as we can. We will have databases in the upgraded version of the Column. You will be able to add your own content to these databases. You will, however, be limited compared to what you can do now.

If you were to only be able to have a few databases in the new Column, which ones are most important to you? Which existing databases (or ones that aren't even available now) should we be considering? We've got a good sense of this and a pretty solid plan but we want to make sure we're not overlooking something.

Let us know what you think. thanks!

Well! it will be sad to have less databases as we have now! but i like Contact info and The ability to create you own! I would like to see a Old Polls Database and maybe a Staff request database that is easy to use! I also would like to see maybe halo 2 xbox live time and info database!

Cant wait for the upgrade tho!

I would like to see some kind of clan databases. You know like members/ranks/fire teams. I use my B.net chapter for my clan the 7th Infantry. Is there any clan additions for chapters? And if i wanted to make a new chapter maybe something to where you can Invite your friends. Sort of like on the xbox live thing where you can invite friends to do stuff. Yea please get back to me on this one.

I know some chapters start a new chapter for spare databases. I don't know if that does harm to the 7th column in the long run but there is a lot of varity in chapters. Some focus on HAL0 or bungie games, while others focus on games or movies.

What I would like to see and I said this before is a 7th column chatroom or something like that. Allot of chapters/clans cerate a new non 7th column web site to support a chatroom.

Well im in the staff of some chapters(Black Halo,Savior, and more) and i do experience that only 10 to 25% of the members actually use the database, for example, Black Halo has a database which asks u to enter your combo for a new MJOLNIR Mark-VI Armor(A database which is very popular amongst chapters)but from the 237 members i have only seen not more then 20 fill that one in.

What i like to see is a database holder for Pictures. And a mass mail system for chapter founders, cause some of my members tend to become inactive...:(

Yea Why is it that no one fills in databases! if bungie could make a way to give it meaning, like if you fill out dtabases it atomaticly give the person rank points. so the staff does not have to do it and people with most pionts get privlages.

You could make abbuse of that, but what is a reason why this happens is some chapters have members which yoin because every one is in this chapter, but never really do stuff in there because they dont want to spend many time, they only fill in the polls cause thats just a click.

Something to fix that is making the process of filling a database faster, but that depends on the server speed and the volume of asked answers. However most people center their view on Chapters to the forum, poll and news, if Bungie could in some way make the Databases more accesable, by giving them a better spot at the homepage of a Chapter.

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

The main type of database that I use at MSXL is the cutom one. A good example of this is the Member Profiles database. There are over 110 entries in it, with info from age to gamertag. This will be important when Halo 2 comes out!

Also, the 'Links' database is essential to MSXL's database nav system. Basically, the "Members Only Area" is a hub that links to other MSXL databases via links. Through this I have been able to create an intricate navigation system, that gives the Lounge the feel of a regular web site. ;P

I'm sure you guys will do a kickass job on the new hotness. The custom databases are essential though!

The Articles database gets the most use in our chapter. We also have fun with the Q&A database.

Shocking, eh? :) Probably the two most popular in most clubs.

We have a boat load of stuff in our databases, so this gonna sting. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm just glad that this place exists and is free.

Thanks for keeping it going.

The standard databases we use the most they are Link List, Q&A, Articles, and a custom "Gathering Log". These are enjoyable and usefull and it would be great if these kind of databases could be salvaged!

Our group is made up of mostly guys in the area and gets together and plays once a month (from 8pm - 4am) and plays PC online once or twice a week so we are pretty active and the site gets a lot of use.

Thanks Bungie for putting up the site for free!

Xraf

[Edit] An "old polls" would be a nice addition to the databases.

Once again, Custom databases do not count. The question is about which pre-made databases you would like. At least that's the sense I get from the post.

This is correct. The custom databases are the ones that were having the most problems with - they don't scale well for various reasons. It is very likely the custom rows db will not come back, and the custom columns database is also on shaky ground.

My current list is Articles, Contact Info, FAQ/QA (they serve the same purpose), Guestbook, Link list, and Gametype. There will probably be one more, and I'm trying to put the custom columns one in there. But the point of the question is to see if there is anything else that would be useful, especially if the custom columns can't make it in.

It should be noted that databases are going to work significantly different than before for the sake of scalability. You won't really create a database, you are simply given 7(!) "resource repositories", 1 for each db type. Each row of data has its own visibility - meaning I can set one article in my Article Repository to be staff only, another to be public, and so on.

That architecture is troublesome to use for the custom columns type. Unfortunately, it is a necessary change for the user database feature (now called user resources, by the way) to continue to exist in a post-Halo 2 7th Column.

Oh, as for transferring data - yes, we'll try to migrate some of it. But the rest will be available for download so you don't lose the data, probably in XML form (it is the most flexible). Unless, of course, you'd like some different kind of export format.

Anyway, that is the true nature of question Sketchfactor asked. Yes, it sucks in some ways, but considering how close the 7th Column is to collasping under its own weight right now, the redesign and reimplementation is very necessary.

Yea a way to view past polls and their results would be spiffy.

i put the old polls database on my chapter and it was great so bungie sould consider that as a database! maybe it can go in there by itself so we dont have to tranfers oll polls to it it can do it on its own!

Officium quod Fidelitas.

I like the sound of the new hawtness. One thing I would like to see though, is maybe some of the hacks become common operations. Like the DB holders, it took awhile for people to figure that out, might as well make it in the standard layout of the themes.

i think i got what yozzel is saying! i would like if databases could be organized easyer! also a way to make link list on your sidebar instead of having External links thingy!
