Curious what you, our loyal users, think about a possible change we've discussing over here in Bungie land.

We're all painfully aware of how much the spammers can ruin our forums. One easy way to eliminate a lot of the spam we get involves creating some "restrictions" on how people are able to interact on the site.

For example.. What if new accounts were limited in their ability to post for a certain period of time? This period of time will have a default value, but can also be manually overruled by staff members. So, let's say for example a new account only post X times per hour for their first X days of being a member... This would obvioulsy make it much harder to continue spamming with duplicate accounts after being banned.

We could actually have several levels of interaction, that people will "earn" as they use the site and obey the rules. The better user you are, the more abilities you have.

My main fear is creating a barrier to entry that will turn off legitimate new users... However, I know a lot of sites do this. You have a probationary period and you're restricted on your level of involvement until you "pass the test of time" or something like that.

What do you guys think? I've been kicking this around over here for a while, and I think it would be helpful.. in addition to some of the other secret tools that Achronos has been cooking up.

I think a two day waiting period for accounts would be nice. It would allow the user to be active in posts all ready on the boards, but not post topics for the first two days. That way for us mods, we would be able to catch them early if they are trouble makers.

in my opnion it sounds great......you should very well do it....and i know ill definetly get a long better with some of these guys, heh, lol.

bah

I feel a mandatory wait of no posting would be bad. Trolls are going to have backup profiles allready created anyway, so why wait? That's like taking guns away from honest people. Criminals still get them anyways. As for restrictions, I really don't know. As I said, trolls will create backups a week in advance anyways. Make it like this: ten posts a day for all profiles under 70 posts. This way, a troll really has to work at it before he can mass spam. Or better yet, no one can, in a day, post more than 10% of their total post count. This way, they'd need thousands of posts behind them to make a spam attack reasonably large. This would effectively stop mass spamming attacks. As for the general dumb stuff, we can't stop that with restrictions, only modding. I think our mods are doing great as it is right now.

Well, after you said all that Rip, the whole idea went out of the window.. Thanks for spilling the beans.

I’ve spent a lot of time moderating at a couple of large message boards. From my experience the best way to deal with spammers is to have a group of diligent moderators and a community of users who, instead of perpetuating spam/flames by replying, immediately report abuses to mods/admins and ignore the trouble causers.

The problem with that is that there are so many users that not all of them know how deal with spammers, so they just flame and spam in response to the original post.

Backups? I highly doubt a spammer would be that resourceful. Plus I'm sure they will implement some kind of system that would curb . Anyway, I believe if we do restrict something we should retrict two things:

1) The new users ability to create topics for an X amount of time. Maybe just a day or two. Most jerks spam by making a ton of dumb topics. Not by replying to some other guys topic. Spammers desire attention.

2) The amount of topics you can reply to within that couple day probationary period. (like you said above)

Also it would be cool if the system could automatically temporary ban someone for creating too many topics/posts with a certain amount of time.

Only Becausae I'm Awesome

Forum Tutorials --- WATCH THEM AND LEARN

Force people to read a terms and conditions form. Like put a 3 minute or whatever the average time it takes to read the WHOLE of the terms and conditions. If they try to move to early, then you post a message saying something like:

'If you really want to become a member of these forums, READ THE TERMS AND -blam!- CONDITIONS!!! WE DIDN'T PUT THEM THERE FOR NOTHING!'

Or something without the swearing...

That way, spammers would not be bothered to wait that long to just spam a forum.

I base that theory on absolutally nothing.

Or you could just make a seperate forum for people who have been here for more than a month, keeping away the 'repeated' topics and old 'new questions'.

Mabey for a probation period but I'll admit when I first logged on I was excited and replying to just about every post not to spam but mostly just to throw in my 2 cents.

I have sugested this before but how about bungie.net make an official chatroom or couple of chatrooms. A few fans and I loved the chatroom Stosh set up but unfortunatly it couldn't handel the amount of traffic that came in and kept crashing poor Stosh's computer.

I love this idea. Not only could it reduce the amount of spam, but also kind of eases "new people" into the Bungie community, and perhaps doesn't make the massive activity in these forums overwhelming. I vote yay!

Personally, I give full support to anything trying to cut out spammers and flamers... *cough mithrandir's many forms cough*... and a suspension on people flaming if it is out of character... *cough DARKSAIYAN cough*... I'm sure he had a momentary lapse of self control but he definately went TOO far.

And it would be nice for some kind of recognition (ie 'level advancement') for those of us who follow the rules and help out the mods... but even without that I'll still help anyway ;-)

I hate to say this- because I don't have a permanent email account -- but why not limit new accounts to people with permanent ISP accounts? Like AOL, Comcast, Brighthouse Roadrunner, etc... RedVsBlue seems to do this, and it sucks because I can't even go on there and read. Maybe a provisional board for all the non-ISP accounts? To "prove" their worth? Or something... Was this a dumb idea? It would certainly stop Mithrandir's multiple names, and then you could ban him by the ISP account he was using...

 • 08.07.2004 12:38 PM PDT

I like that idea

Two days is a bit short, id say a bit more then a week.Cause spammers can hold two days. But after that just the normal way...everyone equal to themselfs

I'd worry about alienating genuine new users, a lot of which there will be after Halo 2 is released. Maybe something to implement after the mass influx of new, genuine users?

Actually, having said that, it would have the beneficial effect of limiting the number of repeated threads, as new users should see a topic before they post the same topic.
