You're right but you can see from the responses in this thread the caliber of individual to whom you're writing. Saying "it's just a video game" is obviously a cop-out to justify their unbecoming behavior.
The problem with bad sportsmanship is that it's infectious. The only thing you can do is try and inject some civility. Avoid taunting, speak kindly: say "good luck, have fun" before a match and "good game" after a match, even if it felt unfair, or laggy, or they were being jerks. The more people who exude a positive influence, the better the community will become. Do your part, and let the kids be kids. They'll grow up, eventually...hopefully.
I've got no problem doing such things to your friends in good fun, but doing it to strangers is rude. Sure, the game allows you to be a jerk, but you need other people to play the game in the first place, so you should probably not discourage them from playing by being jerks to them. If you're still playing Halo 3, chances are you like playing, so it's counter-productive to your interests.
The more nice people there are, the more people want to play, the better the community, and the better the game. Do your part, and keep it clean!
