It's called Halo because it looks like a halo plus it's circling a Gas Giant...

Halo stands for

High
Altitude
Low
Opening

Which means you jump out of an airplane at a high altitude and open your parachute much lower as to not alert anyone to your presance.

That's not what the game is named for. The game is named for the ringworld the game takes place on.

Hey Blue, I think the original post was about what Halo meant in the game, why it was called Halo. We all know Halo has many different meanings, but the correct answer to the original question is because it is a ring hanging over a planet, like an Angel's Halo.

Not some military Jargon.
Read that and weep.

Dude the high altitude low oxygen parachute thing has nothing to do with Halo the game. Halo the game it just means cause the ring around the gas giant is called HALO. the parachute thing is called Halo cause it means high altitute low oxygen because its a special ops division that jumps at high altitutudes so no1 detects them then opens parachsute close to ground and they land behind enemy lines. They have all their gear with them alrdy so they can start fighting right when they land
