Subject: AotCR on Heroic is Frustrating + Marines on 343 Guilty Spark!

Specifically, because I always try and keep all the Marines alive.

I know this is possible, but ever so difficult. For instance, it took me 30 minutes at the first engagement because the Marines kept getting mortared and 'naded.

I took about the same at the second because both the Marines and Covenant would throw grenades, Johnson would snipe a Marine in front, or I would run one over. Eventually, I ended up giving up and leaving one dead so I wouldn't be there forever.

Got to the last tank area, and managed to keep my tank-riders and the guy walking alive. Killed the hunters and the dropship troops. And it turns out the hunters killed two of the fleeing Marines. I quit from frustration, and now have to go back to the crashed dropship. FUUUUUUUU-

Anybody else got horror stories of perfectionism like this?

All my opinion.

This guy seems to have done what you've tried to do. He gets a bunch of marines and covies to follow him to an area so he can create a huge battle.

I never really cared for marines, they always ran me over or threw awkward nades so I used them as cannon fodder :3 Usually works, too.

I always try to keep as many guys alive as possible (as this can change an engagement), but, they just always croak. I think this is one of CE's hard lessons: You're alone, no one will help you for long. You are doomed to see them die. But wait a minute there...Heroic ? Really ?

On Legendary I can usually get a passenger and gunner. You have to get to the hog FAST though. With a chaingunner you are unbeatable and I usually just leave the scorpion behind and do the rest of the level with the hog.
The extra speed allows you to disrupt enemy spawns and allows you to -blam!- them in their assembly points.

One tip. Give up.

I'm a perfectionist too and based on my experiences and countless frustrations, I can say you'll going to have hell until you give up. Unless of course you find this kind of thing easy to do.

But if you must persist, here's a tip (only works if you're playing it on Xbox 360). Save and quit after you get a checkpoint. Then whenever you get a unwanted checkpoint, press the Xbox guide button and press the Y button. This way, you can start at the checkpoint you saved at.

Now for combat strategies,

Snag an early Banshee and fuel rod all of the indestructible vehicles (i.e. Shades, Banshee, etc.) to prevent the Covenant from using them and destroy the Wraiths.

Use a Ghost to bypass the door and bring a sniper rifle. This will help keep your marines out of the fight and keep them alive longer.

The only problem with this is the ice. The Warthog will be slowed down whenever it comes in contact with ice.

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

I tried for over two hours to get the Warthog and a friend over the invisible bridge on the level "Halo," just to see if it could be done. So many different ways of trying to do it and it never could quite get to the other side.

This reminds me - has anyone ever successfully sniped an Elite in a Banshee ? Their hooves are completely visible, and given CE's ridiculously true-to-reality physics, it almost seems possible. After a good 30 minutes, I finally quit trying.

Update: I DID IT! 11 Marines left at the end! And I didn't cheat at all. Straight-forward, using the Scorpion.

I'm not even going to attempt Legendary....

OK, new game. 343 Guilty Spark. Down the second lift. Right before where those 3 Marines drop down. I've saved one before. Almost two once in Easy.

I will not give up until at least one of these panicked cowards survives. And that means not a single shot can hit him.

Oh God.

This, oh Jesus Christ the hours spent trying this over and and over again! One shot. One goddamn shot.

I think he is talking about the part when you go down the elevator and walk into the room with the broken light bridge. There are 3 Marines below the bridge that are getting attacked by Flood. They die very quickly.

Ah, good call Bob. I'm so used to moving quickly past that area, I never even thought of them as "Marines" or anything else. The ugliness of playing on a higher setting...it makes one cold. (Ha-ha.)

Only way to confirm if it's possible is by using Dev Trainer in Halo PC and Devmode in Custom Edition.

Unless of course you're a badass sniper.

Ooh, I love those people, the ones who decide to throw everything and the kitchen sink at you, as if an M16 does anything to a T-90. Oh, MLG player with noobtube instead? Congrats! You blew off one of my ablative plates!

Gun, meet Bad Guy.
Bad Guy, this is Gun.

best thing to do is do the ghost through door trick

helped me a ton of times and sometimes deloaded all the enemies XD

That's the thing - I'm an average sniper at best. Thought someone else might have got 'r done. Don't really know what all the Dev trainer etc stuff is about, but, thanks for your interest.

I just tested it on Halo PC and it's not possible to snipe a Elite out of a Banshee in Campaign.

I can't confirm if this is the same for the Xbox version, since I'm also a average sniper.

They wouldn't remove something like that from the PC game - it was just a port.

Nice test, though.

  • 08.16.2010 10:01 PM PDT

VICTORY!

3 Marines left at the end who survived the ambush. I'm certain there are others we left behind.

It has to do with the difference in multiplayer and campaign. In Campaign, the damage is transferred to the Banshee. In multiplayer, the damage is transfered to the occupant. That's why I couldn't snipe the Banshee pilot out. Also, the Banshee in multiplayer doesn't have health.

And congrats on saving those marines.

I'll have to test that out sometime. I'm certain that the banshee hitbox encompasses the entire vehicle, and around the exposed body parts.

And congrats on saving those marines.Thanks. Took 2 days. Worth it.

I just don't care for the marines. Me and my friend did the level the other day. We intended for it to be on normal, but I suspect it was accidently on heroic. But we still plowed through it any way.

I saved them before. They don't do anything. They just stand and stair at you. The ones on 343 guilty spark, I mean, just down the second lift.

Congrats, chicken. How do you do it ? Opens up so many things so many may have not even thought of...(Ah, the game within the game...)

I just keep rushing in, chuck a frag near a group of Flood and keep them distracted from the Marines.

If the difficulty is Easy and Co-op, you might be able to save two of them.

Basically, he just runs around a pillar and shouts panic phrases. But still awesome.
