I just saw a locked post on winning a vanhelsing poster. Now obviously this is spam, and has no place here, and I applaud you for locking it. However, why not just delete the post?
I appologize if this should not be in the septagon, just a question.

its easier to just lock the posts i expect anyway..... cos if its locked, the people can see the kind of topic they shouldnt be making

  • 05.03.2004 12:58 AM PDT

You could have a trash bin, like some other forums have, where we can see some terrible posts and laugh.

True, but there is a better reason to lock rather than delete an entire topic. I much prefer the moderators to lock threads rather than delete them. This is because someone who posts crap might check back on their thread, and seeing it isn't there, post it again. If it is locked, they can at least see it was locked.

In general, I don't like deletion of entire threads, but deleting individual replies - I have no problem with that if they're violating the code of conduct.

ahh yes yes I never thought about it that way. By keeping the crap there and visably locked it may deter futur crap from being posted!

That's why a publicly-readable trash bin would be brilliant - naming and shaming!

lol yea I still agree with the trash bin, "naming and shaming" could even be the subject of a sticky post to introduce the forum, or perhaps the name of the forum itself!!
Bungie folk! please consider this option!!!

although this trash bin sounds good, im not sure if ti will be... people will be laughing at each other, it will escalae into arguments, always does... then again, it could be the ultimate deterant...

  • 05.04.2004 11:37 AM PDT

The posts in the trash bin would be locked - they'd just be there to a) keep the posts off the main boards and b) warn the users who have posts there.

I have a question for the moderators: why are we not able to pick our own avatars? y the limited collection?

You can't pick your own because we don't trust you to not abuse the ability to link to an image of whatever you want. Allowing you to link to outside server means it isn't in our control anymore, and that's not ever going to happen. You might as well not ever ask about this again - avatars will always be from our public pool except for certain "special" users (Bungie people, Moderators, and VIPs).

The "limited" selection, though - For a launch of a new site, I'd say the selection is pretty good. We're going to add more, but we are somewhat distracted by other things so we can't simply jump on something so minor in the grand scheme of things.

You can pick your own Avatars; you just can't upload your personal ones. I think the limited selection is so people don’t go crazy uploading stuff. (But this is just my opinion, I have not yet received my Moderation Powers. Hopefully SketchFactor or Stosh will come and further this answer.)

Wosers is Archonos fast! He posted while I was still freakin' spell checking....

  • 05.04.2004 2:04 PM PDT

bah

He must have that answer all typed up and ready to go at all times. And he said "and VIPs." I wonder if this means custom avatars or an exclusive selection for loyal Bugnie community members. Like people who have been here for a long time. :) That would kick ass! Although I can see the negative effects as well...

  • 05.04.2004 2:18 PM PDT

Come on - by VIPs he obviously means Very Ignorant Proles!

On the subjet of spam/mods

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=41894&view replies=true&postRepeater1-p=10

On page 10 of the topic about the news stroy about the Covenant, we have people posting simply

"Hey everyone. Wazzup?"
Next person replies
"Nothing much"

Well both of them joined since the updates so they don't know what the old septagon was like and are new and stuff but as someone said when the update occured, the forums may turn more into an AIM chat discussion as opposed to the old forums. Now I am not blaming the mods, they may not have seen it yet but the idea of more moderators is something I think is needed. I mean even stosh and yoozel leave their computer occasionally, as hard to believe as it is.
