I get what you're saying, maybe I can't understand it completely because I'm not in your shoes but I can definitely see where you're coming from. But isn't this the way a ranking system is supposed to be? Its supposed to show who's "good" and who isn't.
Yes but the problem witth Halo 3's is that there is no incentive to even try. "Getting better" is just impossible. I can't "Get better". I'm stuck at my rank, and will never get a 50. Might go up or down some ranks here and there, but I will never achieve a 50. How discouraging is that?
More people are in favor of the Reach system because it gives everyone something to work for regardless of their rank, as opposed to this system where once you get a 50 you either play on that 50 or go after more 50s and that's better for the majority, but what incentive is there for people who play this game for rank and want some kind of concrete indication of their skill? I'm not one of those people but its one of the major concerns they have, that and the fact that rating people based on stats is just ridiculous.
Well see this is what the Arena is supposed to be doing: filling that competitive role. The method for doing so may be wrong (or maybe there is something you players aren't understanding-- whatever the scenario, that isn't my point). For those of you who are super competitive, Arena is for you.
You are absolutely right about why people like the Reach ranking system, because it gives a sense of progression and accomplishment that the Halo 3 ranking system never could, and then Arena (theoretically) rates even more skillfully than Halo 3 ever could by refreshing states each season, checking to see who is consistently good. So if you have 2 people who have played Arena for the same amount of time and one person made the top percentile in Onyx 5 times and the other guy only once, you can then determine who is the more skillful.
So Reach essentially kills 2 birds with one stone. Now as far as the method of rating players, I already understand the flaw, and I know Bungie does too (they have been listening to player feedback, believe it or not). If they have been ignoring it and telling you countless times not to worry, I personally wouldn't worry about it. The beta, if anything, helped them solve any problems they might have had. But I won't try and sway your opinion on the method of rating at this time because i don't everything about it and it isn't the main point of my post anyways.
