A fun map to play on doesn't always make a good map. A map playing well makes a good map. You're in Atlas, I'm sure you of all people would know that.It isn't the type of map I'd make, no. I go for way more intricate and original designs. But the games I have on that map are 99% of the time extremely fun. Remember what the OP is about, they ask "Do you like Orbital", not "Is Orbital a good map?"
Orbital results in people charging to rockets from their spawn or charging to sniper, as there really is nothing else to do. The close proximity of the corridors means you always know where the enemies are, and the cluttered boxes in the hallways mean grenade spam as well as camping with maulers and rgegens/bubble shields is very common. The spawns are terrible, enemies can easily get stupid sandwich spawns on you or spawn right behind you after you killed them. It really does play like this. Not for me, usually.
When I play, I usually rush Sniper with a Mauler and Bubble (if I spawn on bottom) and then I proceed to go to the back of bottom base and provide support for my teammates as they take the room near the bridge. Anyone coming down the hallway gets their head popped off and I provide support fire against any enemies advancing on the bridge. It is a really fun tactic and as long as my teammates have control of our Spiker-room and the bridge-room, the spawns are fine.
I'd much prefer static spawns on Orbital, simply because as you said spawns on Orbital can get kind of wack. Mainly because enemies can spawn in between my team in the Spiker Room and I spawn kill them with the Sniper or Battle Rifle.
But overall it isn't a bad map. Not when I play it. When I think of a bad map, I think of Isolation or Assembly. Not really do I think of Orbital. Of course, I can agree that there are things that could make it a bit better, like increasing the equipment spawn time to 120 sec, and fixing spawns and such.
