Whenever i run halo now, (Cat 4.7) it gets stuck at the microsoft logo screen (the one right before the menu screen), the sound for the menu comes up and when i move the mouse i hear menu sounds (clicks) but the menu is not being displayed, no errors or nothing or hard locks, just no menu display with the Halo moving about in the background.

I tried the strings.dll and that didnt seem to fix anything... Halo 1.4 update is already there since I play everyday.

Whenever I ran the Cat 4.8 beta, i get menu, gameplay, during which oncreen status such as "Player2 was killed Player3", could not be displayed, do you have any idea what the problem is?

Update : Rollbacked to Drivers Cat 4.5 - Works!

Unfortunatly buying an XBOX does not solve his problems. This is the problem I hear the most on these forums, that either the game wont start and minimizes and wont display or that it wont go past the inrto screens. As for myself I had constant problems in Halo PC multiplayer(I play CE now) every time the map changes boom the whole game freezes up and not even calling the task manager program will help I have to shut off my computer.
As far as the problems I have mentioned here are only a small amount of things that can
happen due to a rushed port from the XBOX, man what a crappy job they did!!
It's not my comp causing this case and point is that Doom3 runs on my computer way better than Halo PC/CE ever did!!!!

You edited your original message to say that you solved the problem by rolling back to version 4.5. Why do you need to upgrade to 4.7? Is there a problem you need to fix? Upgrading to new drivers isn't always guaranteed to improve system performance. I'd leave well-enough alone, if I were you. Or perhaps wait for the next driver release.

There are a couple things you might verify if you try the 4.7 Catalyst drivers again. Make sure you uninstall the previous version and reboot before installing new drivers. Don't let Windows reinstall them upon startup. Use the driver install program to take care of the new drivers. If you've already done exactly that, then I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions for you (other than staying with what works).

The strings.dll fix does not sound like it applies to you, even though you have XPsp2 and a 256MB video card. That fix is only applicable if your game is dropping silently to the desktop, according to Microsoft's support page for Halo.

Did you read the rest of my post? Any feedback on what you've done in the past or have tried as a result of reading it? Did you make sure you uninstalled the previous version? Actually, if you have had partial success with 4.8b, stick with that and try reinstalling msxmlenu.msi to fix your problem with text not showing up ingame. You will find this file in your Halo Directory: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo" Your lack-of-text symptoms don't quite match this solution, but it's something to try, just to make sure.

Sorry I couldn't help you. I know troubleshooting can be frustrating, but stick with it.

Maybe some of the guys over at the Gearbox Technical forums can help you out better than I.

Go into your halo folder and run and install msxmlenu.msi

Talked to MS about it, they said it was a bungie problem. Thanks bungie for playing the blame game, and not fixing the issue.

Ok i driveimaged my computer back to Service Pack 1 XP Pro,
cat 4.7 - no problems
cat 4.8 beta - shows ingame text, chat - runs better halo
directx9.0c installed - no problems
so the only factor here is the service pack 2 itself

Now that some time has gone by, I've been hearing of all sorts of problems with SP2. They've made some drastic changes with this update. I don't think I'll be updating to SP2 when I install XP. :P I mean... they took out support for raw sockets for crying out loud. O_o

Anyway, thanks for posting back with this info. It may prove to be helpful for future troubleshooting around this place.
