It is much easier to harm someone when you cannot see their face or have to deal with the consequences of your actions. Some of these people just get angry and forget to vent their anger elsewhere. Others do it purposefully the way trolls do on forums. Finally, some people just act that way, even in real life. It's unfortunate, but true. Unlike these forums, terrible social skills typically do not result in a ban.
Not all players are like that; I got destroyed by a party of Generals once, but they were kind about it and thanked me for staying in despite the odds. The reason nicer players go unnoticed is because the ones spewing verbal garbage are louder.
