I've been playing halo 3 for a little less than a month now, but (somewhere) i read that changing my default orientation to "bumper jumper" would somehow help me.

is this true, and how hard is it gonna be to adapt to the new controls?

"I'll tell you right now, if you ever see someone called ll wa1do ll... leave the game immediately. My friend knows him, I've been in his party a few times, do not mess with this guy. From what I've heard, he's the real deal. I also heard someone made a guy named Wa2do (similar to his name) and then he hacked that guy and boosted off his level." -From Minou on Bungie.net

Personally, I'd recommend southpaw legacy while using your feet instead of hands.

It only takes a few games to get used to Bumper Jumper. Switching to it allows you to be able to aim while you jump or melee. That is a great tool to have if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure it's the most used button set-up, too, next to Default.

Love my girl, 4/11/11.

If you have big thumbs like me, even with Default you can jump while keeping your thumb on the stick.

Takes a little getting used to and can be frustrating at first, but it is definently worth it. Also turning off vibration helps with sniping and BRing. Good luck!
