Last year, I tried playing in a Halo 1 tournament at my college. I joined up with some random people from my dorm, and went to go see the competition. I had played system link at my college, and quickly found out that I'm the best player around. So I wasn't too worried about the competition.

Well, it turned out that the RA who set up the tournament had the rules created by some guys who have some very unusual ideas about Halo. They picked the gametypes, and the maps being played. They played on "Slayer". That's right, not on slayer pro, but slayer. And the maps being played in the tournament were Boarding Action, Derelict, and Longest (WTF!). They seemed to think that the plasma pistol was the skill weapon of Halo 1. Am I wrong in thinking that what took actual skill was the accuracy and deft touch it took to use the Pistol, rather than the frantic twitching it takes to operate the plasma pistol?

Needless to say, my "team" didn't win. We won the first round, but only because I got 27 kills and because the other team was even more disorganized than us. But the second game we played against the players who created the rules for the tournament, and these were obviously the gametypes they used on a regular basis. I couldn't do anything but watch my teammates drown in green death.

So, my question: do any of you actually agree that the plasma pistol was the skill weapon? Or were these just some mislead and stupid kids who never thought to play slayer pro?

dude, you pulled a jesus!

Well it IS their opinion. . . .

I personally never touched the PP just because I always found a gun I was better gun. . . well at least a gun I was BETTER at using than the PP (which is the reason I don't use it in Halo 2 often either.).

Maybe you could challenge them to one of YOUR gametypes, for a rematch. . . or to a normal Slayer pro game (to see if they're as good as they were in their gametype)

It depends how it's used. If you have a fast(er) trigger finger after the charge, I'd say go for it. That's how it used to work when just normal slayer in Blood Gulch. As soon as you spawn, you see a dude. Charge, jump and rapidly throw gunks of plasma at your enemy.

Boarding Action? Sounds like a fixed tourny...lol

I've been to two Halo CE tournys, and never understood why they choose the gametypes they did. The first one, sponsered by Microsoft had games like Crazy King in Blood Gultch. Wasn't about skill, came down to who was lucky enough to spawn next to the hill each time.

At the second tourny, the guy in charge of the place simply changed the rules. The sponsers had generic weapons, and he let us start with Slayer Pro settings. You should have heard the cheers from everyone when he said that. The playlist still sucked, but at least we had real weapons.

95% of people that play Halo CE on a regular basis don't play with generic weapons. It just isn't fun, and people want more range. Same goes for the whole Slayer Pro today with Halo 2. People simply want more range, and something that takes a little more skill. But, then you'll always find those that want to play with needlers or something else most people don't want.

Up close PP are a lot of fun if you have a fast finger. But to play with PP on a map like Gultch, and even worse Boarding Action would be a chore. That's why I hate the SMG. It isn't that it's a bad weapon, I just want to shoot someone, not chase them around to get into range.

well i think you need to work on your weapon skills. use weapons that you don't use all the time to add a few interesting quirks in your game. then you will be ready for anything. besides there is a shotty on longest, snipes in boarding action so just pick up some other weapon and go.

I was under the impression that most if not all people who play Halo 1 use Slayer Pro, not Slayer. I mean, me and my buddies never even bothered with Slayer when we first started playing the game. We just jumped right into Slayer Pro.

The human pistol is no skill weapon. The plasma pistol, if used correctly, is the grim reaper.

Well, in Halo 2 the plama pistol isn't a skill weapon. Not bashing Halo 2 with that statement, it's just true. You don't even have to be aiming it, just point in the general area and it tracks like a mother. But, in Halo CE it did take more skill. The tracking was much weaker and a person could dodge it easily, so you had to be prepared for it to not connect.

But, why do you think the pistol was a no skill weapon? I've played against some very good people, and the better player will always come out on top. If it takes no skill, they why do my and my friends beat newer (noobs) teams 50 to 5 or 50 to 7? It's because we have more skill in ALL the weapons on the map, including the pistol. If it took no skill a monkey could pick up the controller and beat you.

At least with the old pistol you had to lead your targets, which meant timing your shots. You don't really do that with todays battle rifle. Now it's just point and shoot. Same with the sniper, no leading required. Plus, if you play good people online in Halo CE, they don't just stand there, they move around some trying to make it harder for you to hit them. You should try it sometime. Go to www.xbconnect.com and try it for yourself and see how little skill it really takes to use the pistol. When you lose most of the night by 50 to 10, come back here and tell us how it went.
