In response to Lysander: It would more likely decrease the weapon damage and range significantly. Silencers don't work without firing relatively low-velocity subsonic ammunition, and judging by the effect the powerful (by modern standards) 7.62x51mm round fired by the assault rifle has on an Elite's shields, you wouldn't want to have a silenced gun in Halo. The only way I could see this being implemented is if you had a silenced battle rifle in one mission and used it to take out Grunt and Jackal sentries - it would have little effect on an Elite if you're detected. That would be more than enough motivation for me to sneak around. Of course, unless Bungie really does make the switch to that new magnum pistol from the good ol' overpowing M6D silencing the pistol would be moot. The Halo pistol fires .50 caliber hi-explosive rounds. Obviously, if the round explodes when it hits the target it's not very silent. I guess a regular .50cal round wouldn't do much at all if it takes around 4 torso shots to take down a Grunt. I wonder if the silencer is the main reason Bungie will, or probably will, make the switch to the magnum.
Of course, all this is assuming Bungie pays attention to realism, something they did do with Halo and apparently with Halo 2's weapons.
