Subject: HPC flair - poorly handled?

-Sic transit gloria mundi

Well, I've been playing Halo: Combat Evolved for more than eight years, including this morning. However it has always been on my Xbox. I never did buy Halo PC, although over the years there were many times that I seriously considered purchasing it.

I'm proud of my "Halo tenure," and when I heard of this supposed cutoff date, I was a little disapointed that I wouldn't be able to display this fact to all the transient players I would meet in Reach like you could. Not to brag: "I played Halo before it was cool" (which would be true :) But to simply earn a little respect.
Upon news that the cutoff has been removed, I am once again seriously considering purchasing Halo PC. Because in addition to all the reasons that sparked my interest in Halo PC over the past few years, there is now the incentive of this Halo: Reach flair.
Of course, the flair is of little importance, and I could certainly live without it. But it would be nice to have.
In closing, I can assure you that as an avid Halo: CE campaign player I wouldn't let my copy gather dust while I play Reach 24/7

I say buy it ASAP if you can and enjoy classic Halo Mutliplayer, even after not playing it for 2 years I still found it quite enjoyable

If you played Halo 2 in the last days, you got early access to the Reach beta. And that's what we're doing.

When did that happen?

Sapphire just got even more awesome.

Posted by: THORSGOD: Nor is he ever early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

The final 12(?) people still playing Halo 2 (Xbox Live) were given early beta codes for their awesomeness.

You Fail
It was meant to show the Halo 1 Players who stuck with it. Not for little kids to go buy for 20$. Your pretty much said a big FU to the old time Halo 1 Pc players because you can buy us for 20$ You fail and the first lobby I get into we will say everyone with Halo 1 Flairs because they bought them and never stepped foot into a Halo 1 Lobby/ Why even give it too use now? It mean absolutely nothing anymore. It lost all prestige.

Yeah, I wondered the same thing...

Maybe he means the guys who stuck around after it was officially shut down?

Yep... look at my last post.^^^

"BXR. Yea, it's cheating." - Highlight of the last night of Halo 2

Posted by RECKLESS XLII I'm glad that they changed the key code restriction. This way players who have all of the games for the xbox, what the game was made for, and want to spend 20 bucks on a copy of CE for PC can have the flair they deserve. It would make me kind of angry if it was only People who have just had PC forever. Just my thoughts.

I agree with you here, I've been a loyal Halo fan since the Xbox 1 days, I even have a Halo Xbox 1 and feel that if I didn't get some form of Halo 1 flair that I would be being left out undeservedly. So I did just purchase a brand new copy of Halo PC, used my CD key and played a game of Shotgun CTF!

So hopefully I'll get my flair, is that all I need to do to get it technically?

I wasn't going to question it in case I was wrong, but I guess not. I was in the final ~20 and didn't receive early access for that reason.

Interesting that he didn't mention H2V, but I suppose if they could validate copies of the Xbox title then they wouldn't have bothered with HPC either.

You would have been left out due to it being impossible to validate the original game, not because you didn't deserve it.

It doesn't really matter at this point since nobody will be able to differentiate you from somebody who picked up the game up from the bargain bin two days ago or somebody who really did play the original.

I think the best solution would have been to use a full list of printed keys to allow those who never played online to claim the flair, but to have still kept the cut-off date. That might not have been possible to do though. If somebody lost their key then as harsh as it may sound, that's (probably) their own fault and they wouldn't really have grounds to complain.

As for not many people buying the game for the flair, it hit number 8 on Amazon's best selling PC games.

You simply didn't purchase and play Halo: Combat Evolved PC before the cut off date. You considered purchasing it but in the end you did not. Therefore you should not be allowed to obtain the Flair associated with Halo CE PC.

The Visual Flair was initially designed exclusively for PC players because Bungie did not have the ability to collect the information necessary for Halo CE XBOX users to be allowed to have the Flair. I'm sure if Bungie had a way of knowing the amount of time owned and the amount of time played for each Halo CE XBOX owner then Bungie would've allowed them to have the Visual Flair.

I believe the incentive of being able to have the Flair was not to cause people to purchase Halo CE PC for the first time. Receiving the Flair was to display Bungie's gratitude for those who had been playing Halo CE PC for a long time.

Wait. If you played Halo Reach 24/7 then how could you find time to play Halo CE? Lol. Just pointing that out.

Oh well. Now we'll just have to deal with being called posers when we Halo PC veterans flaunt our flair in Reach

Wrong. in order to have played Halo "before it was cool," you would have to have played Halo before it even exsisted.

No, I'm sorry but you're wrong. The visual flair was designed for players of Halo: Combat Evolved. The reason why it was available only to the players of Halo PC was because it had an effective method of proving that one had indeed played Halo: CE, while the Xbox version did not.
Posted by: Agemenmon matt
Wait. If you played Halo Reach 24/7 then how could you find time to play Halo CE? Lol. Just pointing that out.

If you had taken the time to read my closing remarks more carefully, you would have noticed that the negation I presented with the word "wouldn't" applied to all of the remaining statement. Thus what I was saying is that I wouldn't play Reach 24/7, and that I wouldn't let my copy of Halo PC gather dust. This was a mistake on my part and I should have been more clear. However, based on the points I presented in the preceding body, it should have been quite clear what I meant.

Now, I'm dissapointed with your hostility towards me joining the Halo PC community. I was hoping that a veteran Halo player like myself would be welcomed. But frankly, my Halo tenure shouldn't have anything to do with that. You should welcome everyone who shows an interest in Halo PC, including those transient players who were initially purchasing it only for the flair. Because, how are these new players going to recognize Halo: CE's merits if they're going to be pushed out by the Halo PC stalwarts, simply because they haven't been playing it as long as you have?
Halo: Combat Evolved is the best video game of our time. Did it ever occur to you, that some of those "transient players" as I keep calling them, would play Halo PC, appreciate it, and become regular Halo PC players?

Of course, I know that the removal of the cutoff date will open Halo PC to "undesirables." The ones who wouldn't give Halo PC a chance, or if they did, would become burdens to the Halo PC multiplayer community. But really, would these people stay playing this "crappy old game with terrible graphics" as they may call it, when they have Call of Duty or Halo: Reach as alternatives? To suggest that they would is ridiculous.
Welcoming new Halo PC players is a "win-win" situation. These new players are turned onto Halo: CE, and the Halo PC community can only benefit from an influx of new players.

Lastly, I would like to inform you that I have indeed purchased Halo PC, and I am in the process of playing through the campaign on legendary. I'm sorry if my reply seemed hostile, but it had to be said. When I'm done, I hope we can meet on much freindlier terms, in which I'll have the opportunity to bash your head in with a flag pole on Blood Gulch :)

Im real happy for you and Im gonna let you finish...but the BR took less skill to use than a DMR

to the players and owners of the xbox version of halo ONLY:

the flair was originally meant to be a reward for playing the PC/mac port for the duration of it being out even AFTER official support was cut, even after its official support was cut we (PC and custom edition) were brought a couple of updates courtesy of sawnose

these updates were to fix errors and eventually with the last one bypass the need for the CD check sum, which is what the game does to see if you have the disc in the drive or not

Xbox users, YES you DO own the original copy of halo, but as far as it goes you never had to worry about aim bots and wall hacks and speed hacks

the flair was originally meant to show those who endured it a reward

and TBH Microsfot WILL get cries of "this product key is already active" or "i got sold a dud"

the cut off date as I saw it just kept the whiny 12 year olds from going out and finding a used copy of HPC just to get a few extra pixels, and once the code was redeemed, they bring it back for a refund or something, not even bothering to play it..

First of all I wasn't trying to be hostile towards you in any way. I was just stating my opinion. I'm sorry if you took offense.

I'm not unhappy about an influx in players. In fact I'm very pleased. But I am unhappy that anyone with a legitimate product key will be eligible for the flair. I believe those who've been playing for a long period of time should receive the flair. Just because you do not receive the flair doesn't mean you can't enjoy playing Halo CE PC.

I have no problem with new players what-so-ever.

Halo 3: Lone Wolves - 44
Team Slayer - 38
Team Doubles - 46
Team Snipers - 25
MLG - 20
Team SWAT - 28
Halo: Reach: Brigadier Grade 2 - 73% Armory Completion

So wait. Can people get the Halo 2 flair if they played Halo 2 on PC? And if so, can they just go buy it like for Halo PC and make another one worthless?

That's kind of dumb.

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

What about me then? I played Halo CE on Xbox and PC but I've moved house that many times that my CD key has vanished long ago. Along with the fact that the Laptop I used to run Halo PC died about a year ago so my active key is in no way redeemable.

Am I not entitled to go and buy myself a code so that I can represent the Halo PC community?

  • 08.25.2010 12:11 AM PDT

Badass Elite units

I understand why bungie removed the cut off but It's kind of annoying. There are alot of good reason why they did but to me it seems like some of the people who will get it haven't earned it because they just went and bought a game they would never play unlike some of us who have been playing for over 5 years.

Sure you are, but again, it's not our fault that you lost your key. If your laptop's drive is still functional (I don't know what part of it died) then it'd be a trivial task to pull the key from it.

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.
(Proud LONGTIME owner of the PC and Xbox versions of Halo CE)

I liked the idea of the flair when I first heard about it, as I felt "superior" to the people who didn't have Halo PC. :p Then I found out about the HALO flair, and smiled more. But I'm not sure if I like the idea of people buying Halo PC just for the flair....

<3 I dont read the BWU anymore because Im in the dark on Reach, but this is great news!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought HPC a LONG time ago and only played Campaign. I was sad when I heard that it was going to only be for people who played it online, but I am very thankful now that they lifted that restriction. Also, if someone could do me a favor. Again, I have not read a BWU for like a monthe and a half to 2 months, and I would love it if someone could inform me if Bungie has given specifics on how to obtain the flair yet? Have they told us what to do with our keys? If someone could answer that for me it would be much appreciated. A PM would be much nicer than a post in this thread because I dont check this forum very often, but if a reply in this thread is all you can do, then so be it. Thanks again=D

Thanks for the quick reply. Sounds good. Someone just let me know what is going on on Friday because I am not getting anywhere close to that BWU.
