When I load Halo it plays the three introductory movies and then I get a blank screen. I can hear audio, and i can quit the game by typing "ESC - left arrow - enter" as normal, so it's most likely a video issue.

My specs are :

AMD AThlon XP 2500+
1 gig ddr 400 ram
Abit AN7
Sapphire Radeon 9600 xt 256mb
Maxtor 200 gig serial ata
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Player 5.1
Windows XP Sp1 Pro

I tried using different versions of the catalysts, first 4.7, then 4.6, 4.5, 4.4, 4.3 and finally the earliest drivers, that came with my card, 3.9. None fixed this error. All software relevant is patched up to date. I'm at the end of my tether, I've been able to play before (months ago) but just got into installing it again on my new hdd and it's just not working. I don't have problems with any other games or software on my machine, only Halo PC. How do I fix this? I don't want to have to return this and shell out for an xbox and xbox halo.

Hey at least you have gotten to the movies. Me I am stuck on the Halo screen when I try and play it. Can I ask how long it took you to get passed this screen?

Just the normal amount of time. I double click Halo on my desktop, get a shot of the planet hanging in space, get the Bungie, Gearbox, and MS movies, then a blank screen with the audio in the background. I've begun playing on another pc now, with an nvidia geforce 2 gts in, man this bites, i have been playing on min settings for chrissakes. I could be playing at 60 fps in full detail glory on my other comp.

Answer (top):
1. Make Sure that your monitor works good with it.
Answer(Bottom):
1. Reinstall it and post the specs of your computer I could probably find the problem.

Oh i know it runs well with the monitor, I was able to play it months ago remember? Just can't get it to work now, I've formatted and installed a whole new hard drive since then, although the hard drive won't be what's screwed it up. It was the same video card back then too, iirc.

Hmmm... his Hdd is bad because a game won't load? I'm missing the logic behind that conclusion, but whatever. :O Unless he's having other symptoms of a bad Hdd (or other games/programs refuse to load in a similar way), I'd leave the hardware out of this.

There are several things you can try to fix this problem. You can try:
-updating Halo to the latest version
-updating to the latest DirectX
-updating your sound drivers
-updating your video card drivers to the beta that's out right now (but if you're not noticing any variation between the drivers, I'd stick with the latest official version and try these other things and save this for last)
-updating your chipset drivers (mobo drivers)
-the patch recently released by MS for gamers using 256MB cards on XPsp2

You could also check your motherboard's support website to see if they've released a new BIOS that addresses any video issues, but you shouldn't even consider messing with flashing your BIOS if you don't know what you're doing or what the BIOS is.

Also, as far as multiplayer is concerned, check out Halo Custom Edition. It might behave better with your system. You can play new maps and there are other improvements over the original. It's a free download, and way more fun than the original multiplayer. You can find a download list and information in the link in my sig.
