Has anyone else come across them?

Recently, some friends and I played some Matchmaking games, and we were doing well, because we play together well.. But after awhile, we played 2 games back-to-back where we got out buts whooped..

I mean, like,.. Slaughtered.

We've come to the conclusion they were using Lag-Switches.

Personally, this is the first time I've ever come across them. And for all of those who have, I now know your pain.

We strongly believe that we were Lag-Switched because, well.. It was lagging.. Really Bad.. Like, I would randomly start losing my shields. I ran behind some cover. Still losing shields. As I fled to seek better cover, I lost my shield. And in the safety of my base, my player keels over dead... Not a soul around. -_-

And I'd come across another player on the opposing team who was in the running animation, but in place. Totally stationary. I'd shoot him, melee him, throw grenades. Nothin'. Then I die.. /:

Then it would randomly go away! :D

...Just long enough for them to Tea Bag our dead bodies.. >.>

Then it would come back.. ):

On another game, It was One Sided Bomb. During our Offense, the Lag was gone. But as soon as we either scored, or time-ran out, and we we're on Defense, the lag train would arrive, and I would barely be able to move.

I had to laugh during our offense, because they were not playing with the Lag-Switch, so it was a fair game. And (Surprise!) They suck. Total n00bs who can't aim or 4-shot with a BR to save their life. Literally.

Like I said before, This is the first occurrence with the Cheaters. They were 2 separate groups of players, but each had (obviously) new gamertags that had only played Halo 3, and all the same symbol. One of them had Recon, all the achievements, but only a few hundred gamerscore...

Just sharing my unfortunate meeting with "TeH ChEaTeRs!"

My 50 game vs snipedown.

I have played with someone who used one he would say lag on, and the game would go really slow and drag then he would say lag off and it would go back to normal. I was pretty impressed actually. He didn't seem to be able to do much more than make the game slightly laggy however.

Ahh. That's funny how he said "Lag On" on "Off", Haha.

But this was some pretty bad lag.. Either I couldn't move, or they wouldn't move..

i doubt that it was a lag switch. What playlist was it in and what level are you, if social then no it was not a lag switch. If you under 45 then no it was not a lag switch.

considering this is all i read, it sounds likeyou just failed at teamwork and just got owned.

i played a game on pit yesterday, we were winning 38-20 then they suddenly started lagging around and we dies randomly, they caught up and then they stopped lagging around, cowinkidink or not, they still fail, we beat them 50-48.

Gotta love this kind of [not]thinking ...

So, does the cheater go;
1) create a new account (monthly, if its caught - who cares?)
2) ah, ranking up to 28 - easy,
3) mmm, 29 to 44 - little more difficult (but I have honor),
4) Ok, reached 45 - hit the cheat switch.

Nahhhhh. You create a new account and cheat from first game ... get to the top as quick as you can.
Man "only get cheaters over 45" - lol.

...
Why are you still reading this?

I'm not sure what this was, but I've had times when me and this other guy get in an intense close-quarters fight and then I get behind him and assassinate him, but then he somehow teleports behind me and assassinates me. I actually laughed when I saw it.

  • 08.24.2010 5:19 AM PDT

Everyone always assumes that bad connections are lag-switches, lol. Just because everything is teleporting around and you're not able to spawn, doesn't mean anything about "lag-switching". I've seen terrible host that did the exact same thing that you described.

  • 08.24.2010 6:11 AM PDT

Yeah happened to me many times but mainly in custom games.

Just report them put them as avoided players and move on.

What happened to me was I was running on sandtrap and everyone was dying for no reason so I ran from it. I kept repeating what I did three seconds ago and evenually I fell dead. I just lay for a while looking at myself lying there like I was alive but dead. After a couple of minutes I'd respawn as a zombie even if I didn't get hit once by a zombie.

  • 08.24.2010 6:59 AM PDT

It could have just been a really bad host, or a foreign host. Unless it was high level 45+ I doubt you were lag switched. Then again, they could have just been doing it for fun. If you're completely sure they were switching you though, avoid, file a complaint, and move on. There's only so much you can do against people who get a kick out of ruining an online game.

  • 08.24.2010 7:18 AM PDT

I'm pretty confident you have mistaken a bad host for intentional network manipulation.

There is no such thing as a 'lag switch', unless you mean you were being standbyed.

Lag switching doesnt work in halo 3. Try again

Not sure if I have run into people using the lag switch but, I have had games that go from really good connection to lag tacular with in no time and then go away when the other team had about 40 points. What I am thinking if it is a lag switch they may just be testing it in different games to see what I does.

Most cheaters are cheating to get either their own or others' ranks up. Below level 45, it's much easier to just play with a booster if you want to rank up. Cheating just isn't worth it at that point.

Most cheaters search 50 high TS, MLG, or Squad in groups of 3+. Even if the cheater makes a new account, they just play with someone they know who has a 50 in one of those playlists.

Most people work thier way up through the ranks normally until they reach the top and want to restart, or they reach a cap point and find it too slow moving further forward.

Some of those then go "got/getting cheated, going to joing em" and to keep their initial ivestment safe they start a new account. Given thy are already in the plan to cheat, why do you think they would hold off?!?

Its more that players at a lower rank dont notice the cheating as much, as they expect to get beaten ... however come the higher ranks people know what to expect.

There's no reason to cheat at lower levels. It's just unnecessary when it's easier to just search 2's with a booster.

LOL.
Quick test for you. Get a friend to unplug your cable next time ur playing (but for no more than around 3 seconds). Watch the screen and see the freeze running or ghost jumps mentioned above. Same effect.

You also se this if you spam your own link. Set up a repeater running on a PC in the same hub set as ur xbox. Grab any outbound packet from ur xbox and set the repeat rate around 2 or 3 per second ... again same effect.

Now if YOU have host when you run this expect a few complaints as every other gamer will see these effects but not you.

'Lag Switch' and 'standby' are terms based on the old mechanical switch - but now they are software based and allow you much finer control.

Better still - learn how to packet mod and discover how to switch that shield boost or invisi bit on in your packet ... just like running through a field of your own private power ups.
