Subject: Weird problem with ODST and 4 GB Slim

So last night I put in my ODST to play some firefight with a friend but then it says my 360 needs a hard drive to play...even though I started a campaign which I saved and quit just minutes before. Any ideas what could be wrong? I have the Xbox 360 4 GB slim.

Also, I have 1.4 gb of free data. So I don't know what's going on.

buy a real xbox or hard drive

  • 08.25.2010 12:27 AM PDT

This is a real xbox and it has a real hard drive. I can download stuff and I can play online. Left 4 dead 2 online co-op worked just fine.

  • 08.25.2010 12:32 AM PDT

Real men use magnums.

That doesn't make any sense. I have no idea why it would do that. Maybe try xbox support? Although I can't see them doing anything helpful.

I know right? Called them up and they haven't the foggiest clue. Someone on the xbox forums told me that the type of data is different. My 4 GB memory is internal flash memory as opposed to hard disk. Apparently certain games require hard disk memory. This means I am SOL because Gamestop doesn't take back opened merchandise unless faulty leaving me to purchase a 250 GB hard drive separately, which costs about $30 more than the $299 Slim SKU. Microsoft didn't lay down any disclaimer on the 4 GB Slim packaging saying it would be inept at playing certain games online. Lesson learned I guess. Don't trust Microsoft.

I have the exact same problem. Contacted Xbox Support and they told me to "try a flash drive and see if that works."

I highly doubt it will since I have around 3.2GB available on my 360 and I doubt that ODST needs more than that for caching data.

Reach will probably be the same. Damn, I'm so pissed right now! I don't even need 250gb! ARGH! This is so retarded!!!

4GB internal + 16GB flash drive = all the space I'll ever need.

I just wish this stupid game would recognize it and cache it's data on that...

Hey guys,

I'd just like to report that I am indeed having the same problem and it is very, very disappointing.

It's definitely not a space issue, given that on my old and now dead Xbox, I never even came close to using the 20gb hard drive. In fact, the only time I used any real amount of data was when I would download demos.

I agree that it's most likely a problem with the game not seeing flash memory as being compatible. I know that regular Halo multiplayer works fine as expected. I haven't tried Halo 3 on co-op or any other games besides ODST. Do other titles have this issue?

If it's only ODST, or even the entire Halo line, perhaps Bungie or someone at Microsoft could look into issuing a patch?

This is most disappointing because the 4gb model is specifically marketed toward people who can't afford the 250gb model, and there is no mention what-so-ever of incompatibility issues. Any help would be *greatly* appreciated!

Thanks!

MY FREAKIN' 4G WON'T RUN THE SYSTEM LINK EITHER! I have a 16g flash drive, and 3G free on my internal harddrive, but I stil wasn't able to do any multiplayer firefight or mission co-op with the game. I turned off my xbox and took out the usb, and allowed the game to run of the 3g internal memory, but it still didn't work. And they actually expect me to buy a 250G hard drive? WHAT THE #*$@ AM I GOING TO DO WITH 250g! I've defended microsoft over and over again, but if this xbox doesn't run the new halo reach (one of the reasons to buy an xbox), I'm switchin to the PS3 and mac, and never looking back.

Yeah, the same thing goes for Halo 3 co-op. A friend of mine recently got the 4gb slim and it said she needed a hard drive for online or system link co-op. It really is a bit annoying. Hopefully Halo Reach won't have that problem but if it does, it might be worth looking into, Bungie. I don't think many people are going to enjoy having to buy 250gb hard drives to play campaign together.

Chalk me up to this problem. If I knew I was gonna have this problem, I would have held out and bought the 250gb version. This is stupid.

weird.... no idea sorry dude.

I've been in the process of trying to sell my old Xbox 360 (white 20GB, component-only) for the new Slim Arcade, but after hearing a similar complaint I called up Xbox Support.

Basically, I was told that this is a known issue (where the Xbox recognizes the 4GB as internal flash memory, and NOT as a hard drive. I'm not as concerned about online co-op, but the inability to play online firefight would be a definite deal breaker. Furthermore, the support specialist said that while the 4GB was capable of storing saved game data, Xbox Live account information and more, there was no guarantee that it could save downloadable content. She told me that this problem has been occurring with Madden '11 and people who try to download any content get an error message saying no hard drive could be found.

Ultimately, she couldn't promise me that I would be able to download any future map packs for Halo Reach, despite the fact that they clearly would not take up more space than was available. While she told me that they engineers are looking into the problem, I think this is absolutely ridiculous. I do not need anywhere close to 250GB (barely used 4-5 GB on old system and 90% of that was demos). The appeal of the Slim Arcade (aside from the matte finish) was the $100 I'd be saving.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has spoken with Microsoft support, and if so, what they have heard.

I feel bad for you guys but at the same time it serves you right. Trying to get by cheaply on Xbox is a dumb idea. It is only $100 more to get an xbox with a hard drive. You have full sense of security because the xbox will play all titles. A 4 gig xbox is completely BS. Microsoft sucks really hard because of this scam. There are a lot of games that require a HDD to run so either trade it in or sell it on Ebay. People will not know what you know, you can get your money back. Don't hold out for any patches, something like this being converted to use flash memory might be impossible. Good Luck.

I agree and that's why I'm holding out for now. The lady I spoke with at Microsoft did tell me that it was a known issue that they were investigating, but again, she couldn't promise anything. Still, this seems like something that could easily be solved with a software patch, as it seems like it's a problem with the console incorrectly recognizing the flash drive. If online co-op and/or firefight isn't possible because of space requirements, well, that's a different story.

Personally, I would prefer to save the $100 and put that towards accessories or games. I have absolutely no desire for 250 GB of storage. As it is, I only buy one, maybe two games per year, usually a Halo or Modern Warfare title and then a sports title or something else. I always end up selling or trading in my old games so I end up deleting old saved files and DLC.

The simplest solution, if they aren't willing or able to address the error, would be to lower the cost of the 250 GB. It's absurd that I can purchase an external terrabyte hard drive for only $20 more than the cost of Microsoft's 250 GB solution. I know I'm not the only who doesn't need anywhere close to that much storage. At least offer some sort of compromise, maybe $50-60 for a 120 GB drive?

Regardless, I think Microsoft needs to address this situation as soon as possible, especially in light of the console's history of hardware problems. People purchased the Slim Arcade for a variety of reasons (cost, design, practicality, etc.) all under the assumption that a problem like this wouldn't occur.

I'm having a limited version of the issue with Reach. I can't access File Share or Co-Op.

Same Issue as the others said above, Real shady of Bungie not addressing this issue to their Fans. No hotfixes or patches en route either.

Ya the same thing is happening to me i got the new xbox 360 with the 4g slim cant play firefight or co-op campaign microsoft better sort this out this is pissing me off the better come up with a patch or recall it.

  • 09.14.2010 7:03 PM PDT

If "trying to get by cheaply" means purchasing a bona-fide Xbox 360 that Microsoft sells and markets as genuine, how is this a dumb idea? I don't need 250GB. Expecting that a 360 wouldn't play any game just because it's 4GB is simply ludicrous. Since a patch is likely forthcoming, it may indeed "serve me right" to wait a little bit and pocket the extra $100.
