Imagine Blocking a melee attack with your GreenThumb...

For this idea, I must first make something clear...

Let us all first agree that the best control type is "Green Thumb" (same as default except zoom (right thumbstick click) becomes melee attack and B becomes zoom). This is common sense in terms of what one would like to achieve when hitting (i.e. connect that hit).
The fact that when playing on the default control one has to remove his thumb from the looking joystick to hit means that accuracy drops. One needs to aim and then quickly move his finger to the B button and then back on the joystick.
We all know seconds are precious so why waste the little ones when, by the press of a thumb allows accurate pelting of the other guy/gal etc etc...

Also, the B button becomes zoom which one does at a distance and therefore less pressed for time...

Now that we all agree, let's get on to what our good friends at Bungie must include in what's going to be the best FPS since... Mr. Colt had his way...

Imagine a game where when you click the right thumbstick, you unleash a string of violent melee attacks. (done)
Now imagine a game where when you click and hold the right thumbstick, you use your gun to block the oncoming attack (therefore giving you the "parry" advantage).
The second you release the hold, you resume normal play. (so, click a few times and you do the combo, but hold the click at any time and you block)
Of course, the blocking would require good timing. The better the timing the better the "parry advantage" would be...

I'm not talking about turning Halo into a hands to hands combat game. The current combos and the extra blocking would be it.

This means you could stand in front of an Elite and block his attacks only to turn, paint walls with blue blood, and walk away unharmed. In multi player games, how many times have you met an opponent in mid air thumped! thumped! landed and unloaded? Imagine that whilst in the air, you could block his hit, hit him back and then shoot what's left of him (just in case...)

Imagine the potential of being so good you are "un - hitable" (is that a word? It will be when we'll be able to block!)

Imagine and let the people of Bungie create...

I think blocking is a great idea however i think you should have to do it at the right time, say in the same second or two that you were hit so you couldn't just stand there blocking, this would add a lot of skill to the art of blocking and hitting.

Of course!

I actually meant to put that in (check the edit) as there would be an advantage to getting the timing right...

Do you think it's possible that they might have thought of this?
Or even that they would add it to an already highly awaited Halo 2?

I think the chances are slim but if we make enough noise with this thread, they'll think about it for Halo 3 *starts drooling uncontrollably*

Imagine the scene. You meet a much hated multiplayer adversary, he weilds a a shotgun but as soon as he sees you he pulls out a long glowing plasma sword, you swap for the same and you become locked in fierce combat, until at the end you are left with blood covering the walls, you are sevearly wounded but you nemesis lies dead at your feet. cool.

I doubt they'll let us have the plasma swords...
They have to leave the Elites something special at least...

I suppose it could be the one thing you cannot block in the whole game...

But you're right, it would be sweet... I hope H2 is bloodier than the first.

Ok, first of all this is NOT Mortal Kombat (The Game).

I would hate having a blocker combo in HALO.

EDIT:

I feel that this would not be a skilled ability.

Say I want to add a kick to the combo, then we have to add low blocking too.

My only point is that I would not like it. We fight to the death, the blocking comes in
where you avoid the others blows / shots.

I use boxer settings, btw.

no one is saying this is a beat em up, it would just be a change to the ranged combat of sniper rifles and pistols to beat each other to death with a bit more skill than just jumping into each other hitting.

"I would have having a blocker combo in HALO."

Mate, your going to have to be a bit clearer as that makes no sense...
Either that or replace a "v" with a "t"

If you read carefully, you'll notice that there is some level of skill involved. In my conception of a blocking combo, the timing would be crucial. If one were to just hold down the melee button, Master Chief would quickly hit/block and then resume normal position. Therefore one would need to block at the exact time of impact. The better the timing the bigger the "parry advantage".
Compare it to the counters in Dead or Alive..

Of course, this is not Mortal Kombat (spelt with a K it can only be the game). It is however a FPS which was referred to as "Combat Evolved"...

I look at Halo as being the most elaborate FPS ever to hit our consoles. Adding the melee attack gave the game a whole new dimension. It brought us closer to reality in terms of fighting with guns; blocking would only make that dimension more complete (imho).

Of course, we can agree to disagree but if that is the case, arm yourself with better arguments as this is an idea that would involve skill and could give an extra set of brownie points to our beloved game...

It is not like the system would replace any part of the game in the way of a FPS, it would simply add more skill to the hand to hand combat system that is already evolving in Halo 2

I honestly think that the ability to use one's gun for more than just shooting was what really made the difference between Halo and other FPS.

It was a brilliant idea and to add the fact that hitting a Covie on the back brought a silent element to the game gave it, yet another dimension...

Bringing a new element to this concept would in my eyes be totally normal and expected. The good people of Bungie already stepped up the stakes by allowing MC to do combos (sweeet).
The next step should definitely be blocking those badass combos!

I think the only cool 'move' that I would like in HALO would be to hi-jack a ghost like in the E3 demo. But make it almost impossible to do. Otherwise we will breed a whole bunch of whores who will just hijack the entire game.

I think adding the "block" feature would prove qiute interesting.

And Miyamoto: Is your quote from Ghost in the Shell? If so, Manga or Movie?

It's from the film. Well spotted...

Anything to add to the block concept?

Because you'll be glad to be able to do so when I come and thump you hard in MP whilst thermoptically invisible... [evil laugh]

Seen anything from Stand Alone Complex?

17?

You're talking to a French Man, multiply by 17 the original number and you might, you just might make me want to scratch my sac to rid the pain...

Joke aside, I'm sure you can understand the use of something like the ability to block.

As to Stand Alone, I managed to get a clean(ish) version of the first episode on Kazaa and absolutely loved it!! I'm not to keen on getting things through Kazaa as the quality is poor and I do like holding the box of the DVD I watch (usefull for skinning up as well ;)
So, I'll be waiting patiently for the whole thing in English and on DVD..
As to Innocence, well, I guess it's another patience issue...

French humor...what a KNEE-SLAPPER!

Either way, i'm waiting for the US release(s) and also anticipating the live-action movie Production I.G. is working on. Saw it in an issue i bought of Newtype like last year. Has Rei from the EVA series on it, if you get the mag or if you're curious...NGE is SUCH an awesome show.

QUESTION: do you watch the movie in french? heh. jk

you know that if you melee someone at the exact same time they melee you, then you both effectivly block each other, and neither of you are harmed. try it on co-op. and work on your timing.

Great Idea. Last night i was playing Halo with no armor, and we were playing melee only it was so funny when we double killed eachother, but if we could block it it would be cool or kick and throw fireballs from the palm of ur hands and do spining kicks, or have combos

i dont know why people are worrired about it turing into a beat 'em up. i would be happy if there was a block move to counter melee combos, not none of this kung fu kicking business

bungie has stated that there will possibly be a dodge move in halo 2. I asked last year at fanfest about how the master cheif would escape the plasma sword weilding elites if its a one kill hit. So insead of blocking thee probably will be a dodge move.

I don't watch them all in French (mangas) only the ones I can't get in English get to be watched in my first language...

A dodge move? Sounds good.

Although it's in the same league, (and a good idea) it yet again adds to the melee element I so keen to affect. To those who believe that implementing something like blocking (in the way described above) would only increase the realism and quality of gun to gun fighting in Halo 2.

I'm the first to say I don't want Master Chief to unload his shotgun and then break into a 7 punch, 9 kicks, a quick fireball and a flamming upercut combo (although that could be nice ;) But I am the first to say that it is time to give that extra dimension in Halo another push to the next limit...

By the way, do you think the good people from Bungie read these threads?
