Me and my friend are trying to play. We are giving each other the server name, but neither of us can connect to each other. What are we doing wrong?

Are you trying to play a LAN game?

If you are then you need to create an Ad-Hoc network. Both of you need to be connected to the Ad-Hoc network. Once both of your computers are connected then you'll be able to see the server on the LAN multiplayer list.

No not a lan. Just a private match.

Which are you doing to create a private match:

1) Halo main menu/multiplayer/create game/internet

or

2) Halo main menu/multiplayer/create game/LAN

3) Using Haloded.exe to create a dedicated server that appears on the Gamespy Server List.

If number 1 or 2 applies to you then you still need to create an Ad-Hoc network.

If number 3 applies to you then you need to forward ports.

To be honest. I have no idea what any of that is. Ad-hoc network? Forward ports? lol. Thank you for trying to help me though.

An Ad-hoc network is a computer to computer network. It connects two computers or devices.

1) How to setup an Ad-Hoc network using Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adh oc.mspx#2
P.S. You aren't required to create a WEP network key. It's optional.

2) How to setup an Ad-Hoc network using Windows Vista:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Set-up-a-com puter-to-computer-ad-hoc-network

3) How to setup an Ad-Hoc network using Windows 7:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Set-up-a-computer -to-computer-ad-hoc-network

It's easy to create an Ad-Hoc network. Don't worry.
