johnson is on the pillar of autumn at the very begining and in the legendary ending he is seen fighting an elite. cortana also says no one made it off halo but them. how does he survive?

He and a few other people take a Pelican off the Halo Ring. They then meet up and kick some ass.

Explained in Halo: First Strike.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Bungie said that the part of him fighting an Elite isn't canon, it's just a joke for those who did the game on Legendary.

Johnson, Lt. Elias Haverson, Cpl. Locklear, and PO2 Sheila Polaski, escaped Halo's destruction in a Pelican, moments before it collapsed. They later met up with John and Cortana.

Read Halo: First Strike, it's a good book.

This would also be a fantastic moment to point out that "Johnson" isn't mentioned by name anywhere in the first Halo game. In game canon, he didn't become a named character until Halo 2. That black sarge who appeared all over the place, died all over the place, and just generally confused the heck out of people for "johnson dying several times wtf" reasons? Yeah, he's being used as any other stock character here. Just like all the other marines. Because he's not a specific character. Which is also why in some places either he OR the white marine stock character (who is always called "Stacker" these days for the same reason, even though he wasn't a named character either) can spawn interchangeably.

Basically: many of "Johnson's" appearances in the first game, as with "Stacker's", have absolutely nothing to do with canon, and are not intended to show a specific character doing something.

Which means that when you see him blowing up at the end, it's not officially Johnson blowing up. It's just some random dude who has been established as being awesome every time he spawns.

This syas it all. But I can undersand why your partly confused. Because how did Master Chief/Cortana not spot the pelican when they where scanning for survivors?

Because it hadn't been retconned yet.

Ooh, I love those people, the ones who decide to throw everything and the kitchen sink at you, as if an M16 does anything to a T-90. Oh, MLG player with noobtube instead? Congrats! You blew off one of my ablative plates!

Yes to all of the above. Johnson didn't even exist as his own person until 2. The "tug of war" was a joke. (Since an Elite could just rip a human's arms clean from their sockets with one swipe.) Is still a badge...seeing that ending...so much hard work...

Wait, this might be my memory but didn't he help you suit up at the begining? Or am I thinking of Halo 2... Yeah I am definitely thinking of H2.

while (!enemyRageQuit)
headshot (noobs);
if (tBag)
{
noobs = PWNED;
enemyRageQuit = true;
}

Yeah, it's H2. The guy in the armory pesters him to know how he got off and all he says is "I told you, it's classified."

Never read Ghosts of Onyx, but I'm going to guess whatever those guys said is right.
