Something smells fishy...

I hope you have a legitimate product key. As in you purchased a copy of Halo: Combat Evolved and did not download it.

The reason you're getting an invalid CD key message is that someone else with the same key as you is playing on the same server you are.

Does it do this when you try to start the game or once you try to join a game? Like above if it's when you join a game someone on that server is using the same CD key. If it's when you tried to boot the game up it's from a file being corrupt in the installed folder (This actually happened to me today), uninstall the Custom Edition and then reinstall it.

The invalid CD key message appears when you try to play on a server.

Correct. It's more than likely he was using a keygen key that's only compatible with the installation application. Any key not registered with GameSpy will be returned as an invalid key.

It can also pop up when you boot the game up because it happened to me today, but that's not the point here.

Can you create a server with the custom maps on LAN? If not when you installed Custom Edition a file might have been damaged somehow (or it got damaged while you were downloading it). I'd say copy the maps to another area if the Hard drive and then remove Custom Edition and reinstall.
