how does the halo grenade know to blow up when it hits the ground, but doesn't when it hits a wall?

If it stuck to the wall, it would blow up the same as it does when it hits the floor....my god.

I thought they had some kind of proximity mine thing going to them, which is why you can chuck them up a huge grav lift and they'll blow up later than throwing one at your feet with an enemy beside you

My Theory

The Fragmentation grenades may have a motion sensor button near the top of the grenade. Seeing how your character and Master Chief in the campaign, never pulls a pin. Maybe there's a small button the player can push with his thumb. Also it has been explained that Frags have 2 second waiting period prior to the explosion and the time is activated when the 'nade touches anything other then the air.
