No problem bro... anytime ;). Anyways, just finished up lesson 12. If my calculations are correct I will only be able to post one more lesson today til I hit the daily thread limit. Here is Lesson 12... this will help with that path manipulation that you keep hearing about ;). Synopsis and link:

Lesson 12: Path Maps

* Path maps serve as a tool to analyze the designer's current path manipulation
* Two types of paths exist in path maps... objective paths are the shortest path to the player's current goal and divergent paths are paths to other possible goals
* Path maps change constantly as players move around the map, make decisions, and change goals

Thank you so much for this informative tutorial series, I find that it is very helpful to improving my level of skill and understanding when it comes to Forge and later Forge 2.0

I'll definitely be checking back for new lessons.

There's not enough time to do forge. I'm going to be too busy helping those poor Spartans extinguish their burning heads. So many to help, so little time.

No problem bro. Glad it is helpful to you and I hope you keep up with the lessons. Best of luck to you in your transition to Forge 2.0. I'm sure we are all going to love it.

Eventually you may have to take a break and who knows... maybe you will come back and read these... ;)

Good news everyone. I have finished Lesson 13... later than expected. Had to spend some time with the wife. lol. Anyways here is the synopsis and link as usual:

Lesson 13: Area Introduction

* Area Introduction is exactly that... showing players all of the major sections in your map
* Players may eventually learn all the areas by exploring, but you don't have their attention forever
* All sorts of Path Manipulation tools can be used to introduce new areas to players naturally

Oh and not sure if I am going to be able to create lesson 14... let's all blame that daily thread limit ;). lol. But I'm going to go try and get back to you guys.

Thanks for saving the thread you guys... bad news everyone. I have indeed reached my daily thread limit once again. Come back tomorrow and you will get the rest of the lessons. From lesson 14 to the newly posted lesson 20. See you guys tomorrow when I can post them again. ;) Enjoy peepz. I hope this has helped the community and I hope that there will be better maps in Reach because of it.

That's a no brainer. I'm sure some of the guys at Forgehub will definitely take the time to remake it. All of the old maps are probably going to be remade if possible. Definitely one of the most iconic maps of all time and definitely going to be remade and so will the rest of the iconic older maps.

What I do hope for remakes is that they don't completely remake the map. That instead they make an inspired version and improve upon the design using things like these lessons. I highly dislike remakes that take everything from the map including spawns. As time goes by designs and practices improve. Let us all hope though.

Oel ngati kameie, oe omum nga, oe ’efu nga.

Just like to point out how much of a genius you are, i read Lesson 13 and i got to the part about the Eye Catching blue room, and the shotgun was in it and i flipped. I knew that using eye catchers was brilliant, but i never thought of combining that with other techniques to show people the most important areas are. Completely awesome, i love this.

The economy is so bad, the US Navy is having Lemonade Sales to buy a ship. *Hoo-Rah*

Throughout all of my lessons I am doing my best to link everything together. Level design isn't just about following one rule and then following another. It is about everything working as one cohesive whole. It takes loads of experience to start seeing things weave in and out of each other and seeing what techniques are affected when you change something. If I move this light over here then it ruins the eye catching of this room and thus reduces its area introduction effect meaning that the incentive that is sitting there is no longer used leading to terrible knowledge of the map which leads to a bad first impression. See how that works? Over time however it will become natural for you to see everything that is affected and it will allow you to focus on things that you can improve on. I'm still learning a lot of new tricks and how to mix and match them.

Bah... I don't need the personal recognition just feed this to the community and I'll be good. I want to revolutionize the world of forging and turn it into a world of level design. The more people that think like a level designer the more people that teach others level design and then it becomes the standard for everyone to learn instead of geomerging/interlocking. I'm going to raise this community the way it should be raised ;). No more pure focus on aesthetics. I'm going to show the world how important gameplay is and how deep level design can go.

I approve of this Conquest msg... lol

Anyways, I'm off to go work on Lesson 20 over at my blog in my sig. Maybe I'll see some of you there when I'm done with it in a couple of hours. Tonight I should be able to bring the remaining lessons to the BNet forums and then I will update this thread as I release new lessons over the course of reach. There are still tons of topics that I can cover. Stay tuned.

Godly, you should update your thread, since you are way farther than your 13th lesson.

Anyway, these are all extremely well thought out and cohesive. Now that you are quite far along in your lessons, people can begin to see how designing maps isn't about placing some stuff randomly, then testing, then fixing stuff randomly, then post. Its about coming up with a flowing map, then making everything in it work for one purpose: to make it play better. You've even shown how aesthetics help gameplay with eye catching and color contrast. I mean, it really shows you how everything is connected in map design, and while it is difficult to perfect, Godly has given you some advice and tips to help you reach perfection (haha, like what I did there. reaching perfection. lol)I just want to say that for people trying to get some footing in Reach and make their maps actually enjoyable to play in, this is a great place to start.

Just so everyone knows Bartoge is one of my most dedicated and best pupils. He is getting amazing with his design skills. For you Bart... I don't have this thread updated past the 13th lesson because I only have 13 of the lessons transferred over here to BNet. There is a daily thread limit of 7 per day. Tonight I will be adding the last 7 in the lessons and then start updating this as I write new ones on my blog. For those who are impatient and can't wait for lesson 14-20 you can always head to my blog in my signature on here at ReachingPerfection.com. Enjoy my friends. I just posted lesson 20 today and I will be transferring the final 7 tonight to BNet.

Thanks for the support merritt. It is greatly appreciated and I will continue for as long as I possibly can. I have enough material to go well past 30 lessons. So expect them to be coming out for months to come. ;) And tonight is when I transcribe the last 7 to BNet to get it fully caught up with my blog. Be here to see those ;).
