Uh...

I can't believe how relevant these lessons are to Forge. I've been working on Forge in Halo 3 for a very long time, and I swear, everything that made my maps fail was everything I didn't do that is mentioned in these tutorials.

Kind of weird now that I think about it. OP, are you stalking me?

Aim for the face, always.

All these lessons are really good! This is the best(and also the only) manual of how to make maps I've ever read!
You should make a book of it, sell it to bungie and call it "Forging for Dummies".

I can't change my opinion, but I can change yours. My goal with an argument, is to make you change yours, not mine - I want to make you think.

Holly -blam!-! A wall of text that doesn't burn my eyes!!!
You should get a job in UI or something, everything flows very, very nice.

OT: Wow, these really help. Thanks.

No I am not stalking you kymon I swear. I'm glad that they helped you even after you have been such a forge veteran for H3. That really does say something and I hope you share this with other forgers like the dudes over at FH.

lol I actually may make a book out of it, but it wouldn't be forging for dummies... maybe more like level design for dummies. ;)

Will that is quite the compliment and UI would only be an OK job. An ideal job for me would be a level designer, game designer, community manager, user experience designer, executive producer, or something like that... those would probably be my ideal jobs at the moment. Aside from owning my own game company lol... ;)

Thanks man, I have made good maps in the past, but was always doing something wrong and never liked to merge my work. I never liked how much time I'd have to put into a map to do stuff like that. Forge 2.0 fixed that for me and I hope to make even better maps as well as recreate my previous maps.

Thank You!
This is a great explanation of hap to make a GREAT map, that will grab the attention of the community.
Once again, THANK YOU!

I hope it works for all of you as it has for me. This is all self learned from the past 3 years of experience I have had ever since being one of the original 6 guys to turn forgehub from a blog to a forum. I hope you guys enjoy and share with the rest of the map designers out there.

Well I can't say I've spent a hell of a lot of time in Halo 3 forge, mainly because I don't have the many hours needed to commit to continually ending and restarting a forge map.

I plan on really getting in to it with Forge 2.0 and spending quite a bit of time there.

That is actually the main reason I started this series is because I know that a lot of people turned away from Halo 3's forge because of how difficult it was. But now people are going to start diving into forge in reach because of how much easier it is. They may not have any experience but that is probably for the best. By reading these lessons they start out fully in the design aspect and the focus of gameplay being key to success. Hopefully everyone reads this so eventually when they try to make their own maps they have a good background already.

Really good lesson just went up on the main site about "Safe Spawning". I recommend every reads it before diving into forge next week.

For all those who are only interested in spawns check out the following articles... they will improve your spawns immensely. This is important since spawns can make or break a map. Keep in mind that if something is linked in the lesson then you can click on it to read about that concept.

Lesson 10: Spawn Perspectives

* The spawn perspective is the first fully controllable perspective that the player sees in a map
* All things in a spawn perspective need to be observed in order to predict all future perspectives
* Perfecting the spawn perspective can fully influence all following perspectives of the player, giving you huge control over the player

Lesson 11: Smooth Spawning

* Decisions forced to be made during the first few seconds of spawning interfere with the initial spawn thought process and cause hiccups in gameplay
* It is important to remove anything that may change the player's perspective drastically
* Removing all interferences to the initial spawn thought process can smooth out and polish gameplay

Lesson 20: Safe Spawning

* Being caught flat-footed (or unprepared) is an un-enjoyable experience on spawn
* There are many things that need to be kept in mind when avoiding unsafe spawning
* Spawning is one of the most important topics for level designers and it can make or break a map

Thanks for these tips. I've been trying to read them all but some are a little to technical so I have to read them in bursts, I've read I think the first seven I'm going to re-read Incentives and Deterrents. Truthfully I many great ideas (not trying to brag) in Halo 3 Forge that just couldn't be made due to restrictions in Halo 3 and my own patience. I can't wait to take those ideas and implement them in Forge World. Maybe you should write something about taking advantage of Forge World's locations, some kind of guide on how to start an idea.

That's completely understandable. A lot of us have had great ideas, but being able to execute them in Halo 3 was a nightmare. So now with reach we can all make our dreams come true because of how easy it is. Good luck with your ideas bro. Forge World is a massive place.

As far as writing a guide for taking advantage of Forge World locations I will look into it and if I do I will post it over here after throwing it up on the blog. Good luck getting through all of those lessons. It took me like a little over a month to write all 20 of these so don't expect to understand them all right from the get go. And don't think I'm just stopping at 20... I can keep writing all the way up past 40 or so lessons. I've got tons of topics to cover.

This is not helping the wait for Reach. :P

While a lot of this might seem obvious to some, I know for sure some people don't see this as obvious information.

I didn't read all of the info as of yet, but it might be a good idea to include a lesson on social connections: even if you made an awesome map, if no one knows about it, no one plays it. Also I know from experience that a map that someone wants to test out can't test it out very well if they don't have a following of people willing to play the map.

Lol well they will keep you buys reading and thinking about them while you wait for reach at least. And I completely agree. What a nascar driver sees as obvious for his car a math nerd may not see as obvious, right? lol...

As for a lesson for social connections I did plan on writing some of my lessons on getting your maps out there, advertising, rounding up people to play, etc. All in good time. Gotta cover some of the more important stuff like spawns first though lol. ;) There is loads of depth to being a level designer.
